After picking up the mission, if I try to go back to the chantry to speak to the templars about the letter and locket, my game crashes and returns me to the desktop. Anyone experienced the same problem?

I take it ya talking about the town with the prisioner, and the head chamnty NPC has the key to his cage.
haven't had the game crash to desktop yet.
I completed that but can't add him to me party as he's blocked by morrgia(or whatever her name is)

NO... I'm talking about the information you find in the body of a dead templar when you attack the bandits at the road. The information tells you to go back in town and ask the templars. When I try to enter the chantry, the game crashes.

k well itried attacking the bandits and keep dying so I rescue Sten from his cage but i can't add him, if and when i manage to add him to me party Iw ill attack the bandits and see what happends.

Thats definitely a bug.

my part problem is fixed, as when i played this afternoon it was selecteable.

I had the same issue. Took Leliana out of the party and it stopped crashing.
