Actually Dr. Ray had nothing to do with the creation of Shepard as a character. That was Drew, Casey, and Preston the designers and writer.
Note: Not saying anything about what Dr. Ray said. Just correcting this error. Dr. Ray is in charge of the company not the individual character designs of each game.

But yes, some of us disagree with him. Commenters on the IGN thread quickly questioned why he didn't correct the error by the interviewer about an "abortion mission", They questioned the purpose of his continually mentioning every other BioWare game on the market in questions that were specifically about ME, and I have personally detailed the numbers that prove Shepard is more customizable than the Warden.

I will provide them again.
Shepard: 9 Pos. Combinations of History/Career. 6 Possible Combat classes.= 54 Possible Shepards.
Warden: 7 Pos. Combinations of Origin/Species. 3 Possible Combat classes = 21 Possible Wardens.

Ignore for a moment Dr. Muzyka's title and position within the company and look at it objectively. The numbers simply don't lie. The only difference is some incidental facial features and the fact that you play out the origin mission instead of simply clicking the box. Once you reach Ostagar the game is exactly the same no matter what origin or race you chose.

You make valid points. In fact, in that perspective I even agree with several of them. I may still contend that Shepard's sexuality is in no way set-in-stone, but I can understand your reluctance to see an Iconic character potentially altered. In fact I'll go one better and say that I would only want Shepard to be given a m/m option if it was approached in a way that in no way alters Shepard's history or personality.
If he was suddenly not flirting with half the women in the universe then yes, it would suck to make that change. Then again I flirt with women all the time so perhaps I'm a biased source on the idea of flirtation not equalling ravenous sexual desire...
Anyway moving on.
So we can agree that it would be fine for a future title set in the ME universe to have a main character whose sexuallity is up to the player?
If so then fantastic.

If an option was present from the very start, Sexual Orientation = Hetero/******, then I wouldn't be against that. It surely isn't that hard to understand that as a straight man I don't want my Shepherds sexuality brought into question. And yes, if a gay man started flirting with me in real life I'd feel pretty uncomfortable too.

It's more a matter of continuity as stated before. The option simply doesn't exist which is a MASSIVE inferrence to MSheps sexual stance. If you look deep enough you can read something into anything, but the facts speak for themselves.

not necessarly, you haven't had any male team mates that were bi or gay, so the option has never been explored, implmenting it in the last game wouldn't really be off continuity, since there hasn't been an opportunity for m/m romance since no options were available in the last 2 games.

There might not have been any gay male characters, but there's been a ****load of straight female ones. Hence the INFERRENCE. It's offered to Shepherd to get down with the ladies, it isn't to go gay. So it infers he's straight.

Thought of it long before in the thread, but, no words to put it out there. As to that it even happens in life too! Sometimes it isn't about the GENDER is is about the person themselves. Charactericaly.

I actually second that. This is starting to seem like one of those fan-run message boards that focuses entirely on all the possible love-combinations of the characters.

sadly true, we sould probably get back to discussing strategies on how to make both parties in this debate somewhat satisfied

I don't want another Zevran, that's for sure... If they're gonna do it, don't pick the most obvious stereotype to base it off of. I understand it was "in his background" but ugh.

Edit: Ninja that only happens if you load the romance save. Otherwise it's just a handshake and a "feel like I lost a limb"

Zevran was only a latin queen on the surface...once you got his approval up his real self came out and he was alot more caring and normal

Apparently you have not had any experience with female Anime fans. Yaoi obsession is their specialty. That and I have a friend whom herself is more obsessed with seeing m/m romance than I am even. 

The Queen in True Blood likes it when men two men are together as well

I've hugged lots of my male friends. Doesn't mean I'm all of  a sudden Bi. Gay guys don't get brotherly camaradarie it seems...they just see an excuse to infer gayness.

Yeah I've done the romance all the way through and it was rather touching but I'd still like something more subtle for Mass Effect. <_<

Not that I experienced Zevran in DAO yet, but I agree. I dislike fem-males its just. Uck. Terrible stereotype. Possibly the very reason why its so hard for men to date... Only obvious gay men to hit on are the ones you prance around like women... ugh.

As I've mentioned earlier, I would like to see an anti-Shepard.  Another human Spectre who has a completely different moral compas than Shepard, and competes with Shepard every step of the way.

But at the end, Shepard may seduce/persuade/intimidate him and get him to join the team, or confront him in battle.  He could be a semi-antagonist and would create drama for us and the ladies ( I wouldn't mind sharing him with the ladies.)

I won't get into real life situations because, honestly, I have an entirely flawed world view due to my circle of friends.
Back on topic though.

I beleive what you just said is the core of why there is so much debate between our sides. You see the lack of option as a sign of Shep's sexuality. Many of us see it simply as something that was removed from the game.
And yes, I understand your position that this signifies that the designers decided Shepard was Straight. The problem is we were told the removal was due to resource restrictions in the first games design. Which means, to us, it was intended as part of the character but then taken out for purely technical reasons.
Most of us, me at least, were fine with this explanation. Then we discovered that the same thing was done in ME2 with the m.Shep/Thane dialogue and the f.Shep/Tali dialogue.

So, this brings me to another hypothetical. Would you be opposed to the proposition made on another thread about a gameplay options setting. Nothing that occurs in-game, but a same-sex romance dialogue option switch in the same settings menu as Difficulty level and Subtitles.
Particularly one that with a default setting of Off.
That way, by keeping it at the default setting, Shepards sexuality is never called into question. But those who want to change the setting will be able to. Heck, it could even be argued that it would mean "default Shepard" is straight since the default is Off.
Thoughts?

If the hetero nature of MaleShep was so pre-defined, then wouldn't my MaleShep have ended up with one of the two women who were romance options in ME1? Or, failing that, I'm sure there would have been some in-game reference to him being a ladies' man. Too bad there was no such thing.

I can somewhat understand not wanting to have your image of your character changed, but that goes for me, too. My MaleShep remains gay, and I remain disappointed that it seems Bioware will not be providing romance options for him due to some claim that he is pre-defined as strictly hetero (though there is no solid evidence in game for this). IMO, anyone who looked at Kaiden and MaleShep in ME1 and didn't see the very clear bromance had some serous blinders on.

I would like to see some m/m romance options - not sex, but romance - for ME3, or ME1/2 DLC. I like to see all my character's romance options open. Something as subtle to pursue as the relationship with Sky in JE would be great, but I wouldn't say no to a more aggressive love interest either. If I can choose who I pursue for romance, why shouldn't it include m/m once in a while? (Not including f/f, because apparently it's not that difficult to get that included.)
