There's a wealth that could be added to this, but I think it strays off topic a touch as it is a very deep philosophical discussion that goes down so many paths, as interesting as it is.

Sociological factors are huge in deciding how people express themselves and definitely the fear angle is valid, but I'd personally say that power is another factor.  It is easier for someone to assume that thing are black and white, society has decreed that being gay is being weak and so people want to be viewed as strong, being strong is most easily shown through vindictiveness or through the act of disinterest and casual degradation.

Compassion is harder, because being compassionate is part of being weak to the mindset of those who have rigid world views.  Empathy is not something that is welcome.  Creating the Other is important in this and that comes through fear and power, you fear the Other, you want to be superior to the Other and you also want them to be strong as to make it righteous for you to hold any view you wish.

So gay people are simultaneously terrifying, almighty in their ability to "convert" and yet weak and feminine to the patriarchal society we have.  It requires either a huge will to believe such things or a total lack of desire to understand because you want to be powerful and that requires you to remain ignorant and casual in how you view the Other.

The fear shows here in that people disparage those who want to feel attachment to their character and request it, because if any game makes sense and would break boundries it would be one such as ME, where the character is clearly defined and heroic with a full personality that you can influence.  Making them gay wouldn't alter that at all but it would break stereotypes down.

Why is that fear shown?  In this thread it come sup in the view that gays are both weak, effete and "fairies" while also a powerful force with an agenda that threatens the fabric of society.  It is a fascist outlook in that the enemy has to be both invincible and able to threaten the powerful while also feeble and easily beaten.

John Shepard is the "canon" shepard. I don't mind people thinking he's straight though... as long as people don't think what he is should affect your own individual shepard's. My Samantha Shepard wouldn't be very happy with that logic. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/angry.png[/smilie]

Oh, I assumed by saying John Shepard, he was refering to the canon one as that is his canon name. If not my mistake. >.<

This is actually central to the discussion.  I believe that Shepard didn't kill Wrex and that he punched a reporter twice, now for many others they believe Shepard saw Wrex die and that they gave full and frank words with the Reporter without violence.  I also believe he's holding faithful to Ashley.

The experiences vary so much and in other games people have romances with Tali or Jacob or Kaiden.  Your Shepard is a straight male, but it doesn't matter the slightest if to someone else he is gay or Bi and in game options refelcting this would have been monumental from an immersion and progressive standpoint.

To clarify something, the romances aren't a huge point of the game for me.  I roll my eyes at many of the discusssions I read and get shocked at how into them some people get.  To me they're a facet of the experience that makes things rounded, for sure the emotional dialogue is touching but it's still part of the experience and not the experience.  I don't give it much thought beyond how it makes Shepard into a more complex character with his own loves and desires to be honest.

It's just in a discusssion like this the opportunity for someone whose gay to play Shepard and have a person instead of a stereotype on their screen would have been powerful on a number of levels and I believe it was a misssed chance.  Giving Shepard a m/m romance is important in the ssense that he isn't designed as a gay character, he's a character who can be gay, it reflects that he's a real person who isn't defined by his sexuality, which is one of the most harmful aspects of societies perception of gay people.

I don't want to see every character as bi, it's unrealistic. But I think a mix of say 1 bi, one fully homosexual character for maybe each sex, or something like that.

One bisexual character of each gender  would already be an improvement from the current situation.    But some people would be frustrated that their favorite character is not romanceable to them.... Oh Alistair :-(

Perhaps some limited customization of your team members should be allowed, including their appearance and their behavior towards you.   In that case, straight guys could have Jacob as their buddy, while others could have him as their LI.  People could also reduce Miranda's forehead if they wanted to.....
