No it wouldn't.  This isn't a game where you can say "ok jacob.. lets have him gay".  "Miranda.. lesbian".. "we'll keep Tali straight".

This is a story and these are well written characters.  Sexuality is an important part of someones make up as a person.  Its stupid to even want this option.  Every piece of gay dialogue and every straight dialogue would need animation and voice acting and its very selfish considering how few gays play this game.

Not everything needs to be gay or have gay influence.

JoshuaMast, you make it sound like same-sex relationships are from another dimension or something. The developers don't have to create whole new stories and characters to make same-sex romances available. See Jade Empire for example. Dragon Age had them too and did not face any bad press.

If it was brought into Mass Effect more people would leave because "OMG Bioware you turn ME gay" than new gay customers would buy it.  Therefore it wouldn't be wise.

If they do do it, there will be far more anti threads than 1 thread of the same 10-11 people for it.

I know a few people who bought it because of the gayness. (Never underestimate a bored yaoi fangirl).

Oh there will be people who would have bought DA because of the gay relationship.
And there will be people that didn't buy it because of the gay relationship.

But at the end of the day that was a new game without an existing customer base.

How many new (i.e not currently playing) players would buy ME3 because it had a gay relationship?
How many existing customers would not buy ME3 because it had a gay relationship?

Considering there isn't that many gay gamers, and those that are into ME would probably be playing it already, coupled with ME2 gaining a large fanbase of teen males into shooting things, I think this decision would cost them sales.  But even if it doesnt, its still devoting time money and resources to a very minor percentage of the player base which could be used to benefit every single customer including the gay community.

I'd just like to add that the gay community has been craving some sort of sci fi setting... Star Trek ignored it, Star Wars ignored it too. But now with shows like Torchwood(HUGE in the community) and now Caprica, I don't think the demand for it is as small as people are saying.



Do I think some people will be so petty that they'll boycott the whole game if it was included? Sure... but I'm almost certain that the fans it brings in would outweigh the ones that quit over it.

I disagree.  Because its an existing franchise.

I think more gay people would buy a game than straight people would not buy a game because it has gay relationships in it.

But with this, they already have a % of the gay gamers.  And there really isnt many gay gamers.  More straight people would leave by turning this iconic character gay, than gay people would join.

Alright this is the first and last time I'll respond to you... Nowhere do I mention sex. None of the scifi that's out now with same-sex stuff is about sex. It's about the relationships so don't pull that "all about sex" crap. We've all heard it. We want a RELATIONSHIP.

And you don't think that a game of ME's caliber couldn't bring in nongamers? The story is good enough it just might.

Never saw those before. The fact that they didn't include it could be due to any number of reasons; tester feedback, polls, the aforementioned media backlash, internal politics.



Since the scene never got beyond the make-out scene, would suggest the latter. I can imagine a few animators being uncomfortable about animating a gay sex scene. Though on the same note I could see those same animators, volunteering to animate a lesbian scene.

It does.  And I bet rather than praise Bioware for it, you were crying that you couldn't sleep with Alistair right?  :-)

Its a good game, although the same sex romance is a major flaw in my opinion.  Would drop it about 10% if i reviewed it but at least you can avoid it.
