How does the argument Shepard doesn't look or act like a gay or a lesbian person even make any sense?
Is it really possible to tell if a person is homosexual at first glance every time?
Just because Shepard can act tough or be nice doesn't make him/her straight.

Shepard isn't gay. However, I've been told numerous times that I'm homophobic for stating that gays have a certain "look".
Therefore, just role-play him as a gay in your head....and role-play that none of the doods on the ship are gay....therefore he can't find love during his mission.

Then turn off your computer, go outside, and live your gay little life to the fullest.

...

Right so all straight men and women have a look too?

If that's the case can you tell me what it is? It would be useful so my friends know who not to hit on.

I think you took away the wrong overall message from my post.

I'm trying to press upon the OP of living his gay life to the fullest in real life. Not through a game. Bioware already said no gays or gay relationships in their game. That's what they want. They are making the game. Stop crying, and stop making these useless threads.

You shouldn't have placed that bolded gem in. <_<

Except for a few gender specific phrases, such
as "handsome man" / "beautiful woman", Zevran's dialog is almost
exactly the same for both genders.

Actually he rambles quite a bit on the fact that you might or might not, as a male, find his attraction unpleasant and all that. Maybe you didn't explore all the dialogue options, but there are quite a lot that don't appear if you're female.

I think Zevran has about 3 lines to test out your sexuality before he moves in on you.  Those lines were obviously inserted to prevent accidental same-sex romance.   In a game that has thousands upon thousands of recorded lines for every possible scenario, this is nothing.

Arik7 wrote...
What would make a gay character believable in your eyes?  Does he have to be effeminate and embody all the other negative stereotypes of gay men?

That would be exactly what would make him like all the tons of token gay characters you see in mainstream media, and that's exactly what a writer that doesn't really know how to write a believable gay character would end producing.
And that's exactly what Zevran is. A silly walking stereotype.

Evidently not all writers are able to write what you describe under the quoted lines (even if you oversimplified quite a lot). A romance (any romance) needs depth, and just using the same standard lines doesn't cut it. It's quite possible that the mass effect writers don't feel up to the task. In that case, why should they do it anyway?

You make it sound like a same-sex romance is some kind of an alien practice, impossible for anybody to understand and to write about....   Just write a romance, where the people may or may not be of the same sex...  done!

Feddie Mercury.
He may have worn tight clothes but who didn't in the eighties.
According to you, all straight guys have to be extremely tough, even when there is no call for it.
I'm straight and I'm sure as hell not looking for a fight everyday.

Rock Hudson, Rob Halford (of Judas Priest), at least three openly gay Rugby Players, I'm pretty sure one of the members of Rammstein, Guillermo Diaz (the mexican drug dealer guy from Weeds), Chuck Palaniuhk (Wrote Fight club), Clive Barker

Seriously. It doesn't get tougher than Rugby and death metal. Unless it's Fight Club.

Captain Jack Harkness! ... well, he's pansexual, so he would sleep with Miranda, Jacob, Tali, or Garrus. Heck, I think he'd sleep with a hanar, if he/she/it was willing.

See, now I can't create a Jack Harkness character in-game. :(

Newsflash heterotopia! Being "tough" or able to fight doesn't making you any more or less of a man. That's a socialized gender norm, if I've ever seen one.....I think everyone in life should be require to take a sociology class....

Yeah see... 99.99999% of heterosexuals can't beat Lesner or Mir either.
That's sort of the primary qualification for a UFC champion... not... being... beaten..

Edit:
and if it's about fighting. I'm pretty sure the Rugby players still qualify. Ian Roberts could pretty much beat any of us to a pulp. (some of us wouldn't mind either)

ALAS
Quick. Back on topic all of us.

A well written letter, not e-mail but letter to whatever the customer service address (especially if you ask to 'write a letter to the president/corporate office'. Not that the company president will get it but that's the folks that deal with escalated issues) will generally get you ten times the response of spamming a forum thread. Forums generally reflect the absolute worst aspect of your customer base, regardless of what business you are in. A written letter, especially an intelligent one, is more likely to generate a sincere response.

DA:O has same sex romance options as have a few other games. classical RPGs are more prone. As ME1 and ME2 especially were aimed more at the console shooter market but with a heavy RPG element it doesn't seem unreasonable that the backlash would have been worse. Enough to impact sales I have no doubt. Just look at these forums, skewed though they may be and add all of the soccer moms crying 'Not that I have anything against those, err, gays, I just don't want my dear little Timmy to play a game involving, err, homosexuals!' If Shepard was written as homosexual I suspect you wouldn't get all the same people here saying 'Well, It's BioWares game to write however they want!'  They likely wouldn't have bought the game but would likely be screaming about it on any forum they could find, 'Why would BioWare do such a thing?!?'

BioWare isn't required to help move the social agenda along. Historically most advances in civil and human rights have been driven by the higher courts, not legislation. In the US the idea of racial equality was forced into place in the end by the supreme court. Legislation and the common public opinion wanted the Jim Crow laws. Public opinion did not support the idea of racial equality, neither did the legislative branch of the government.

All of which is neither here nor there. The truth is that given the opportunity, history shows that majority of human beings will be sucky to anyone they can identify as not just like themselves if opportunity permits.  Businesses though are driven by majority and as such games like Mass Effect will not likely include M/M love interests. It would hurt their sales. That the truth of it sucks is another debate not suitable to this forum.

So? I don't get your point. Jackie Chan (before he got old) may or may not have been able to beat them. Does that make him less of a man? If martial arts > fake wrestling, does that mean your wrestling heroes aren't real men?

If BioWare imported what Brock Lesnar does for a living into ME2: Wearing close to nothing, grappling and wrestling around with other men whilst sweating.

This thread would not exist!

Yes it would but it would be:

New Gay Straight Shepard Thread.

And you'd have a bunch of rabid yaoi fangirls telling them to GTFO the forums and play their own games.

Seriously a bunch of sweaty men grappling each other on the ground trying to get on top of each other to smash the others face in with a small ring most of the time wearing man panties with stockings. All that touching and togetherness...
