Another thing about DLC (sorry to harp, as stated this is the top of my wishlist so it gets stuck in my brain lol)
It would also help avoid the whole "media firestorm" issue that occasionally gets brought up.
Mind you, I suspect there wouldn't be a firestorm any way it was done because it looks like the media is busy raining brimstone on the presidency buuuut... just in case BioWare worries about it, here's why I think DLC would avoid it.
The consumer market for video games has 2 parts.
1: The Fanbase which is made up of the loyalists, power players, achievement zombies, etc.
2: General Public which is made up of renters, parents of kids who like games, people who play out of boredom, and people who just play-to-beat.
(The last batch being those people who skip over all the side missions just so they can brag that they beat a 90hour game in one night.)
The major difference between these two groups is that the first is more likely to buy up DLC for a game they love. DLC doesn't change an entire game, it just adds to it. The people who don't care enough to replay aren't going to spend money on DLC. Group one has also already passed the age-appropriate hurdle. Anyone who didn't think their kids should play the base game,
can't complain about DLC because they can't play it.
Group 1 is also more likely to do lots of research. This is where group 2 gets the firestorms. they don't research, they get surprised by something they don't like.
In that respect I can kind of see why they get upset. Games aren't cheap and once they're open you can't get your money back. So yeah, i'd be p*ssed too If I bought a game that looked good then found out it had content I found morally reprehensible. If I bought a game and found out it had a gay-bashing mini game, I would want my money back.
DLC also doesn't deal with stores. It's not like your kids can pick it up off the shelf and throw a fit until you cave and buy it for them.
So again, the angry parents aren't involved in DLC. They didn't get the main game because they already found it objectionable, so they can't play the DLC.
THIS is how the full frontal male nudity in GTAIV:TLAD went under the radar. Parents couldn't complain because they didn't let their kids get GTAIV to begin with. Anybody morally outraged over a completely non-sexual peen was already morally outraged over hookers.
So by going the DLC route BioWare can avoid backlash, show its fanbase love, and make a profit.
Edit: *ahem* Hey look something that isn't a flame, troll, or off topic! Let's talk about this!
