Fair enough KS, as you can see I've more than a small knowledge of the Smith's work myself. When I was 12 I thought they were great, these days I tend only to pick them up when I need a good laugh. But yes I too was was quite certain with ME1 that the writers had taken some inspiration from Smith.

In a way I would characterise the two games as ME1 is Bioware's Star Trek game, where as ME2 is their Babylon 5 game. In as much you are in a much more morally fraught and difficult place in the second plot. Allying with groups and people for far more dubious moral reasons. (which to my mind makes it all the more interesting). I kind of wonder if ME3 is going to be their Firefly game.
