Okay, I've been having this issue since release day.  My DVD drive, which has no problem recognizing DA:O or ME2 disc 2, does not recognize disc 1 when it's inserted; it acts as if there's nothing in the drive at all.

Sounds like a bad disc, right?  Wrong.  I ordered a replacement, which arrived today.  Same problem.  Also, my laptop's DVD drive can read the disc.

Do you have any virtual drive software installed? if so this can interfere with the copy protection system on the disc and prevent it from being read. the simple soloution is to thoroughly remove the virtual drive software until after you have the game installed.

I do. However, I also have the same software installed on my laptop, which can read the disc just fine.

Try updating the drives firmware.

I don't even know who the manufacturer is. Seven says that everything's up-to-date and running fine.

Edit:  Actually, it says that the drive is using drivers cdrom.sys and PxHlpa64.sys

Quote from a site:

"Before updating your firmware, there are some important concerns you should know about. If your drive works, don't flash it. Firmware updates should be a last resort type of fix. Search out other alternatives before choosing to flash your drive. Firmware flashes are done so at your own risk. When upgrading, always make sure the firmware version you are upgrading to is the correct firmware for your drive."

No, I won't be flashing my DVD drive because there's one DVD that it won't play, for reasons that no one has yet been able to come up with. Any ideas? Bioware?

@BlueShiftPS

Then just share the laptop drive over your home network or something and install from there to your desktop, will probably take a very long time though... Or download and use EA Download Manager and unlock a digital downloadable version of ME 2 with your retail key.

you can get the download manager here: http://na.llnet.cdn....m-installer.exe

I got around the installation part by ripping the disc to an iso using my laptop, then (after copying via portable hard drive) mounting and installing it on the desktop. Unfortunately, the game still needs disc 1 in order to start. I'll try sharing the drive.

since you bought the game and has registered here, I see no problem in tracking down a mini-image of the game and start the game using that.

Yeah mini-image is probably better if it works to run the game for you, plus you save some space, but it might not since when you used your iso it still asked for disc 1? if I understood correctly.

Since in theory you should be able to just use your own iso that you've made on your laptop if you've copied it over to somewhere on your stationary desktop and mounted it from there, which you probably have since you installed from the iso.

No, my mounted disc doesn't pass the launch authentication check. I can (and did) install from it, but not actually run the game.

Update: The DVD failed to authenticate when I shared the dvd drive. Any more ideas?

No-disc patch? I'd much rather have a working disc. If you guys are sure that it's the drive, I'd be willing to fork over $20 for equipment to play this $60 game.

Disc 1 did well on the first day of playing, but right now my laptop can't read it anymore. I noticed some scratches on the dvd, but I have no idea where they are coming from. I've been treating it like it's my baby. When I bought it, the box was still wrapped in plastic, so I didn't bother checking it before playing.

I tried to use the EA download manager, but it keeps saying it's not a valid code for activation of products. I tried both serial key as the cerberus activation code. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

So, I've tried this with a THIRD copy of ME2. Once again, disc one will not read. Every other DVD that I own will.

There's something odd going on here, and judging from the other replies... It's not isolated to me.

Is anyone else having this problem? Can anyone else think of a possible cause or solution?

Similar problem here. I was lucky enough to manage to install the game (DVD 1 was recognised after mayb 20 tries to mount it), however the game won't start as DVD was not recognised etc...

You bought it three times? I was considering buying a new copy, but according to your post, buying another one might not help...

The frustrating thing here is that my boyfriend's computer has no problems with reading disc one, so I thought that maybe my laptop is too sensitive for the scratches on my disc. Since more people are having trouble reading the disc, maybe there's more to it.

I installed it last friday and played it without encountering any problems. The trouble started on sunday; it would only load after a couple of attempts of putting it in. Monday and thursday it took even more attempts, and now it's dead. I can't get it to work, no matter how many times I try.

I'm happy I was able to finish the game yesterday, but this is getting extremely annoying... I want to play it again and this disc trouble is pissing me off.

Hope someone can find a solution.

Update: The downloadable Windows Troubleshooter claims that my drive is capable of reading DVD-ROMs, etc... Well, I'll just tell you exactly what it said:

The drive cannot play the CD, DVD, or BD

The disc is not recognized by the drive. The disc might be damaged, inserted upside-down, or have an unsupported format.
This drive can read the following disc types: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R DUAL.

According to the box, the disc is a DVD-ROM. My drive reads other DVD-ROMs, including ME2 Disc 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. WTF, Bioware?

I don't see any reasons why it can't read dvd 1 but reads dvd 2 just fine.

Are you guys on windows xp, vista or win 7?

Perhaps the built in burning feature in vista and maybe windows 7 keeps detecting the dvd as a blank dvd instead of one with data on it, or the autoplay just isn't working.

One thing you can try is to remove the dvd drive in device manager then reboot and have windows reinstall it.

Some links that might be related to the issue.

It does act as if I've inserted a blank disc, and I'm running Windows 7. Neither of those links are particularly relevant, especially seeing as I've already run Win 7's drive diagnostics/troubleshooting tool, and posted the results above.
