Even if you have the same software installed on your laptop doesn't mean it'll work the same on your stationary.

If you're sure its not a corrupt/bad filter, driver conflict (Sonic Solutions) or a conflict with windows 7 built-in burning, cd create function, DLA packet writing or whatever, then I'm afraid you're looking at a firmware update, trying another drive, getting a new drive, or going back to the basics like checking cables, perhaps the lens is dirty, drive has trouble recognising dual layer discs etc..

Read through this: http://support.micro...14060&x=12&y=15 and try whats suggested there, which I guess you've done already since it suggests to run the diagnostic/troubleshooting if you use windows 7.
However

If you can play or access a CD or DVD, you are finished with this article.

If you cannot play or access a CD or DVD, you may have to reinstall some programs. Some programs might not be able to use your CD or DVD drive until you reinstall those programs. If the problem occurs again when you install or uninstall those programs, contact the manufacturer of the program to see if an update is available that solves the problem. Some examples of programs that might be affected are:

    * iTunes software by Apple
    * Nero software by Nero Inc
    * Roxio Creator software by Sonic Solutions
    * Zune software by Microsoft

After reinstalling your programs, if you can play or access a CD or DVD, you are finished with this article.

Update your windows if you haven't already tried that...

What happens if you boot into safe mode, or try a "clean boot" and try reading the disc?
Clean boot:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Another thing you can check is going into device manager and expanding the IDE/ATA/ATAPI node and click primary IDE channel or the one that your dvd reader/writer is on click properties then advanced settings and check what transfer mode it has, if its set to PIO for whatever reason set it to DMA if available and reboot.

Since as far as I know this game doesn't even have any copy protection at all, that can cause problems with certain drives, it just has a simple disc check.

What is the brand/manufacturer and firmware version of your dvd reader/writer?
Could be a pattern if more people are having issues with the same brand and firmware.

Anyway I'm running out of ideas to suggest, try registering and posting over at this forum http://www.techsupportforum.com/

Personally if it were me, I'd want to make sure its not a software/driver/firmware issue before buying a new drive.

In safe mode, it claims that the disc is corrupted. The transfer mode is UDMA 4.

So, I know there's not a problem with the individual disc. Trying three should pretty much rule that out. The drive reads every other DVD that I own, so there must be something different about Mass Effect 2's first disc.

This is the info I got out of the CE dvd's.
Seems to be same format type.
Different recording dates though.
Dvd 1 is larger.
Perhaps your drive has trouble reading larger dual layered dics?

I just used the ea downloader to get the digital copy and installed it so now I don't need to be constantly putting in the disc.

I've had the same problem with both ME2 and DA:O but no other DVDs. I can only assume it's a broken copy protection system or perhaps DRM that they claim they don't use. When it misbehaves I find that ejecting it and trying again works for me; probably won't fix it for everyone, but might be worth a try.

Okay, this has obviously gone far beyond the realm of what I can troubleshoot/fix alone. Let's call the drive a lost cause.

I've activated the game in the EA download manager. EADM sees that the game is installed, and has a nice "launch" button for it. Unfortunately, that just leads me to the launcher, which runs its usual disc check. And fails.

Right I just installed ME2 on my desktop but the 2nd disk couldn't be read. So i tried again and still the 2nd disk couldn't be read. Then I uninstalled my virtual disk program and tried a 3rd install. This time it installed without a hitch but when i tried to start a new game it locked up. This, it seems, is because ME2 needs a multicore processor and my desktop only has a single core.

So I decided to install it again on my laptop which does have a dual core chip but on the laptop disc 1 isn't recognised at all. Windows explorer shows the DVD drive as being empty and when i click on the drive it ejects the disc with a message telling me to insert a disc.

I've heard that many recent games have a 3 install limit so I'm wondering if my three attpmts at installing ME2 on the desktop have made the disk unreadable in my laptop. This is making me mad, every other disc i put into the drive works perfectly.

Just bought ME2. My drive can see and read the disk. I can start the install. Towards the end, I get a "data read error, Install failed."
I tried to unpack the movies.rar manually and got a CRC corrupt data towards the end of the file. A poster above me mentioned odd scratches. I did notice some odd looking scratches that follow the circular contours of the DVD. None of my other discs have these odd marks. Perhaps someone dropped a spleef into the DVD press at manufacture.
I am returning the game. As much as I love Biowares games I am losing my patience with EA support who's advice was to rub the discs real hard and think happy thoughts.

I had the exact same problem (I was able to install the game the first time I entered the disc though), I tried really hard to fix the problem, I even updated my DVD-RW's Firmware and nothing...

Obvious conclusion... Use a crack, it is legal if you do possess an original copy. Plus, you can keep your original disc at a safe location and use it just for installation processes ;)

PS: Also, do a backup of all the files you're replacing, you'll need them if Bioware launches some kind of update/patch.

Late update: My disc one is still dead and I can't use it. I thought cleaning the dvd driver would help, because of the scratches, but it still won't read this disc. When I tried to use the EA Download Manager the first time, it kept saying my serial key was invalid. When I tried a week later, I got an update and I could finally registrate and download the game. Works great, no discs required and my ME2 dvd box is ready to collect dust :). Happy I can play again.

Try go to SecuROM's web site and run the uninstaller/cleaner.
I had the same issue and that fixed it perfectly for me the second I ran the uninstaller and re-inserted the DVD.

That's an even better idea, thanks ;)

Disc 1 did well on the first day of playing, but right now my laptop can't read it anymore. I noticed some scratches on the dvd, but I have no idea where they are coming from.

Same problem.

All the other dvds can be read normally, but ME2 suddenly cannot. It worked just fine for over 2 months.

Inserted the collector's edition dvd and no luck.

My guess is messed up protection on the disc itself.

EDIT:

Problem solved after I uninstalled Itunes from my laptop.

Disc 1 can now be read and everything works fine.

Hi,

I have the same problem... I could install ME2 and DA:O without too many issues. But most of the time, when I insert the DVD's, they're not recognised. Usually, ejecting/reinserting a couple times solved it but now it seems to be completely down...

I'll take a look at the eletronic versions... Seems EA/Bioware can't provide decent disks...

Usually it depends on the frequency of playing and the amount of heat the XBox takes. In a cool environment, (for me anyway) you could probably play up to 7 hours. But that all depends on if you have a humid area, dry area, Elite console, Arcade with or without a drive, and if you keep your disks clean.

And for computers.... Same rules apply but extra ones like computer type and graphics chip go into play.

IMO, there is some unadmitted type of anti-copying mechanism included on the disks that is incompatible with a range of drive hardware, and its affects don't always show up right away.

Just adding my name ti the list of people whose ME2 discs are not being read. ME1 and RE5 will read and work, but ME2 is just a blank DVD, according to my computer.

Same problem here. ME2 discs one and two "can't be accessed" by my DVD drive but other things can. Lame.
