I'm a bit conflicted with this one. Being able to read subtitles can make the delivery of some scenes less dramatic since you can read ahead of their speech, yet at the same time I have trouble understanding some characters.
It is either because of loud backround noise like on the Omega station or because some characters, like like Thane are difficult to understand.
How do you prefer to play?
Do you guys play with the subtitles on?

I don't think I've ever used subtitles in either Mass Effect game. The only reason I usually would do so is if I needed to keep the volume down and didn't have a headset.

I always do in Bioware games.
I don't know why, but they can never get their voice/background sound/music balancing done properly, so if you don't have subtitles on you miss quite a few things.

The only character who I need to turn on subtitles for is Legion. He can be a bit hard to understand. Thane can sometimes be hard to understand when he is reliving his memories and talking super fast as well.

I play with subtitles on. I'm afraid I might miss something with my ears; it's like a backup plan.

Yeah, sometimes you can end up missing things otherwise.

I don't- I find that reading the subtitles takes my eyes off of the scene too much. I only had a few times where I could not understand what people were saying (much better than ME1)

I always do. Actually in most games - I don't know why, I just like it better

You're right in saying that some scenes are delivered inappropriately with subtitles on, but I've learned from any past gaming experience to ALWAYS put the subtitles on. On repeat playthroughs, I can simply read through what I've already seen very quickly and get on with it. In my first playthrough various noises (dogs barking) or people talking to me (party chat on XBL. My friend did not understand "BE QUIET" during key scenes). Not to mention that I often miss something that a person says. Subtitles account for all of that. The one tradeoff is well worth it, imo.

I always have subtitles on, and being hard of hearing, I'm very glad Bioware includes them. Doesn't ruin any hilarious lines or epic one-liners for me anyway, even if I do read them. xD

I love how the music in clubs gets louder as you walk in...I keep my sound levels high so when I enter those places, I turn on subtitles. Otherwise I leave them off.

I play with subtitles on, not because I cant hear them, not because they are hard to understand, but because I've spent SO much time watching subbed TV shows, I'm just used to it.
Although, for a true experience, Subtitles OFF is a must. (After about 10 seconds without a reply, the subtitle will show up to help your decision.)

I have subtitles on. Background sound sometimes is way too loud.

I don't. I really like how ME does the whole clear screen thing, though I can understand needing otherwise.

I leave them off in all games with them, unless the game is Japanese with English subtitles or something. Subtitles get in the way.
By the way, you guys do know you can turn down the volume of background noise in the game to make dialog easier to hear, right?

For some reason, I love subtitles, and play with them on. I did the same for ME1 and most games that have them, I put them on.

I play with them off, and only had one or two instances where I wish I had had them on. That being said, don't initiate a conversation if you have a singularity still up. That crap is loud.

I usually do. I don't want to miss anything just because I wasn't listening well enough, or weird speech or background noise.

I always put subtitles on, so I can learn english from playing games.

I guess I'm in the minority here. My first playthrough of ME1, I had subtitles on. My second playthrough, I turned them off, and it totally changed the experience. Everything felt so much more immersive. I have missed some dialogue here and there, but not enough for me to give up the connection that I feel with the characters by looking at them in the face when they're speaking to me.
