Subtitles on. To me, understanding every syllable is paramount.

I use them since its nice to read them just in case I didn’t hear what someone said correctly. What bothers me is the placement of these subtitles at least in the first game. Why must they be placed on the actual game screen and not in the empty black bars at the top or the bottom of the screen?

used 'em in ME, but not ME2. the cutscenes are just so much more cinematic that I can't stand having the subtitles ruining some truly great scenes.

I had them on, so I wouldn't miss anything, also since mass effect is heavy with technobabble and unique vocabulary, I can get proper spelling and know exactly what they are talking about.

I like to have subtitles on, I think it's because it reminds me of watching foreign films. I also like to use them because sometimes I do miss things. All in all I don't think subtitles ruin any of the cutscenes as I can easily look past them if I don't feel like reading what they are saying.

On my first play through I usually don't because I tend to read them instead of listen to the Voice actors. After the first play through I keep them on.

Nope, I never do. The only time I use subtitles are when it's a language I don't understand.

I guess I'm in the minority here. My first playthrough of ME1, I had subtitles on. My second playthrough, I turned them off, and it totally changed the experience. Everything felt so much more immersive. I have missed some dialogue here and there, but not enough for me to give up the connection that I feel with the characters by looking at them in the face when they're speaking to me.

Whenever subtitles are EVER an option for me, I always turn them off. To me I just get really distracted reading them, it feels like a more face-to-face conversation when I observe their faces instead of subtitles. As said before, I get a more immersive experience that way.

Nope don't need them. Also playing with them on kills Immersion.

Never. If I do, I'll read them rather than listen, which destroys the cinematic experience/immersion.

I have subtitles on.
English isn't my first language and while I like to think I'm pretty fluent in it, it's just easier for me to read then to listen; especially after a long day at work when I'm tired, when a character is mumbeling a bit or when there's a lot of background noice.

I have subs on as well and the only time I think they "ruin" anything is when they are badly synced and they appear before the character even starts talking. But I have learned my lesson and somehow my brain blocks them out until the character finishes his animation and starts talking.

Absolutely, too bad the text is so small though...

I almost always turn them on if a game has the feature. So, yes for ME & ME2.

Only use them on the first ME game for elevators. Sometimes your teamates seem to want to whisper at each other, ahrd to hear what they are saying.

Nope, haven't had to use them yet. I find myself paying more attention to subtitles when they're on rather than the actual characters, and given the amazing animations they've done it sort of takes away from the game. That, and with a pair of $200 headphones I tend not to miss any dialogue.
