I did with DA:O and realised that I missed out on alot of the facial animations and actions as a result, as my eyes naturally gravitate towards them. I play ME and ME2 without them, and while I'll miss some bits you get so much more I think.

Since English isn't my first language, yes I do play with them on :D I just don't want to MISS anything. And if you've grown up watching tv with subtitles as the norm, you're so used to them that you don't suffer from lack of drama or anything. It just feels very natural. Yes, it IS possible to read them AND look the characters in the faces when they speak. Especially if you know the language well enough so you only consult the subtitles occasionally.

I always turn subtitles on if possible..

Reasons being that if for example its late and i have to keep the volume down, or someone watches tv in my room or someone is talking to someone nearby, i'd hate to miss something "important" during dialogue... also im a finn, i can understand english perfectly but im more comfortable with subtitles, incase theres some expression ive never heard of with an accent thats odd to me, i can figure it out from the text..

Yes always, but I think it takes away from this particular game. When I dont pay attention to the subtitles i get more immersed in the game. I just leave them on so i dont miss anything.

on: as english isn't my native language, but prefer to play original versions ... so that I have a chance to understand at least the meaning of the words, but sometimes even that is too few information :-O

Always have the subtitles on. Knowing the lines in advance is sometimes annoying, but it's more annoying to not understand what was just said.

I keep them on because I must have some kind of autism spectrum disorder or something and understand things 100% more if they are in text rather than said (especially in video games and movies)

Always on, no matter the game, as long as the option exists. I understand spoken English quite well but there's always something that i tend to miss.

IMO subtitles don't affect the scenes dramaticness or anything.

I have very poor hearing in one ear, so I have no choice because multiple sound sources (music+voice+action effects, etc) tend to blur together for me, so without subtitles I am guaranteed to miss something. That said, I do prefer subtitles off because then my concentration is totally on the character faces, I just can't understand some of what they are saying.

I only use subtitles when i'm playing on low volume. Usually subtitles draw my eyes away from the characters faces. I prefer watching their faces while they talk. Lip-sync has gotten good enough that reading their lips + listening to dialog is easily understandable for me.

When I turn on subtitles, I do notice some of the background stuff more. Didn't notice the Blasto ad until i played with them on.

Why do people keep resurrecting 1 month old threads?

I find that it distracts from the experience. I only play with subtitles if I know I'm going to skip a lot of dialogue. So at least for my first playthrough, I absolutely do no use subtitles, unless there are scenes that are very hard to hear.

Boredom. Or, because they use the search function (which is a good thing, overall).

On, because the sound level mixing (especially for front/rear speakers) is pretty bad in Bioware games.

I had them on for my first playthrough, then turned them off because I found myself staring at them instead of the characters. I've found it a MUCH better experience without them.

And the spoiler thing was pretty bad, too. It was really annoying when the subtitles were displayed before they were spoken.

For example (fake, to avoid the read spoilers). EDI says "The rachni are.... purple." But purple is on the screen like a full 3 seconds before she actually said it, so the impact was spoiled.

They should have put them on 2 seperate lines, and displayed the "...purple." in time with her actual pause.

Well, some people complain when you start a thread thats already been made, others complain when you resurrect said already made thread. Theres really no way to avoid complainers.

I only play with subtitles on if a game has poor sound mixing and the music overshadows the dialogue, which hasn't happened to me in ME2. In general terms I don't like playing with subtitles on because, for me, it breaks immersion.

That's a good point too, that's maybe going to become more and more prevalent with the continued development of digital acting.  The characters are so lifelike now, I don't want my eyes wandering to other parts of the screen while they're doing the emoting thing.

I ALWAYS play with subtitles on in every game. That's mainly because I can't bother whole family with loud games. I tend to play with low volume and what I can't hear I read.

Nope, no subtitles. I still hate when I'm forced to watch TV on channels where I can't turn the Danish subtitles off (same problem at the cinema, which is one of main reasons why I tend to prefer watching movies at home on Blu-ray/DVD instead) - it's just been hardwired into my brain during my childhood to read those damn subtitles, even after I grew older and became fluent in English.

Nope. I find them way too distracting from the scenes and immersion-breaking. If they were near the very bottom of the screen, perhaps, but they're too high up as it is for my tastes. Besides, I rarely have trouble hearing or understanding what's been said.
