I found a solution for people with the freezing problem at the selection of new game, unfortunatly this only works for duo or quad core users.

1) Go to "Start"

2) Type in "run"

3) Type in "msconfig"

4) Go to the "Boot" tab

5) Select "Advanced Options"

6) At this point the startup number of processors should show "1" and should be unable to be changed.

7) Uncheck "Number of Processors"

8) Check "Detect HAL"

9) Click "Ok", then click "Apply"

10) Reboot your PC.

If all goes according to plan, when you reload, you should be able to do this:

11) Go to "Start"

12) Type in "run"

13) Type in "msconfig"

14) Go to the "Boot" tab

15) Select "Advanced Options"

16)
You should again see the start up number of processors. However, this
time when you click the drag down menu you should be able to select the
proper number of cores (4 in my case).

17) Click "Ok", then click "Apply".

credit goes to Bluewolf35948. This worked for me hope it works for you guys, im able to get in and have been playing fine so far. Sorry i couldnt help those with single core problems. Much love, bluewolf said dont forget him when you name your first-born's.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I just realized I was only working on 1 processor this whole time. I just tried these steps and the game works perfectly. Again Thank you bluewolf and cripunit. Also Bioware I'm sorry for anything I was an ahole about cause your game is amazing and you guys did a wonderful job, it was actually my computer the entire time and not you guys.
Anyone will dual core or multi and game isn't working definately try this because I'm 100% sure this will work. Unless you have someother problem.

I've tried both Nivas' suggestion, and bluewolf's suggestion, and none of the seem to actually do the job, even tho I kinda felt like, after doing what bluewolf suggested, the studdering rate kinda lowered, but it was still there. Talk about unlucky...

sigh dont want to be a downer but its been 2 weeks since the problems have been announced.. I know it takes a while, but the first patch that has no real fixes for our problem isnt even out yet.. I'm pretty sure we'll have to wait more than a month for the 2nd patch.. Bummer..

Yes, I suspect you are correct that it will be a few weeks. This did moltivate me to check my mobo manual, and it seems my system will support a duo core cpu (AMD) without a new mobo, so I am probably going to buy and install a new cpu. My guess is that I will have it long before we see a fix for the single core issues--maybe by next week (I hope). I don't think this is going to be all that expensive, but will have to wait and see....Image IPB

There's no telling how pissed I am. I finished Mass Effect 1 last night, then went out with some friends and while out promptly bought Mass Effect 2 CE. I woke up today, installed it, including all the extra content from buying the Dragon Age CE and the ME2 CE. I try to import my character and it freezes on the loading screen. I come here and realize I'm **** out of luck unless I lay down 300 dollars on a dual core and reformat my whole system. Talk about a buzz kill, just coming off the high of beating the first game. And the **** of it is, I know my system could run this game like butter I I could actually, you know, play the game.

Please, Bioware do whatever you have to make sure this is patched up soon. And by that, I mean SOON. Like, within a month would be acceptable and any longer would would not. From what I've gathered while reading, it doesn't seem like too much of an issue that cannot be fixed within the next patch or sooner. Please, Bioware your fans paid good money to play your game. Don't let us down.

Hey guys, I've got an issue with the game freezing at the research lab in the level where the VI system takes over the ship. The screen goes black, but audio continues just after you turn on the beams and the room goes to quarantine. Games been perfect til now, I've tried the new save slot fix, and it continues to occur.

Dude, it's like $40 for a dual-core on newegg.com. Just sayin.

Play the game in poor quality, I might add. As well as build up the anxiousness that leads to the final mission only to, again, be shot down.

Either upgrade your system or stop ****ing til the patch releases (if the patch releases), imo.

Um, no?  Game plays just fine.  Nothing wrong with it.  And no problem what so ever with the final mission.  I'm already on to my second and third play throughs.

Depends on if he has to upgrade his mobo and get new RAM; for some people going from single to dual is basically a whole new rig.

I really want to play ME2 the way it was meant to be played with the cinematics and everything. I tried doin the fix that bluewolf and cripunit mentioned and I don't have the option to Detect HAL in my Boot.ini tab. Does anybody know why?

My specs are as follows:

Windows XP Home Edition SP3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
3.5 GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM
Dual Geforce 8600 GT with 256 RAM

Indeed. Im currently searching for a nice upgrade. Of course my 3yr old mobo has to go, including the nice 4gb of DDR2 ram I put in over a year ago. Then you need a nice processor that last. So, if I do not want 'the best of the best' but a nice upgrade worthy of a gamers pc, I need to spend €300 to €400,-

Nope. Like you, we're all sitting here waiting on bated breath for Bioware to finally make a more concrete announcement.

All we've been told so far is that "if" there will be a fix for this, it'll only be in the 2nd patch, and they're expecting the 1st patch to be released in around a month or so...

*sigh!*

Heh. Similar problems here, albeit a lot less problematic. Dunno if I should be posting, since I have a duel core and my OS and the games config tool both show it as a duel core... But here goes.

Played through the entire game with no problems (at all) until the Horizon mission, in which a simple system restart seemed to fix it..

Now I'm at the last mission and I can't progress past the convo with Illusive Man. It starts the Omega 4 relay cut scene, I see it flash a few times and then it goes green, black, stutter stutter and just freezes, but the music continues to play.

I can't imagine not playing the ending with all the cut scenes.. I simply have to finish it properly. It's sacred. Just one of those things. Guess I'm being picky, but I really don't wanna finish it with the -nomovies fix or alt green movies...

Anyone else got a fix worth trying? I do plan on playing through a few times, so I'd be willing to wait for a patch, if that's what it comes to.

Another IFF problem...

i can't understand that i gave almost 50 $ for this game, and they can say that they can't repair game with patch? So, i have to wait a few months for possible patch, or no patch at all?

Thats not professional...

I'll wait a little more, but this is definitely last game from Bioware that i bought...

Sorry for my english :)

ok, i might have found a way around the iff problem, which i will try today.

this will require to transfer your load file into a dull core PC with Mass Effect 2 installed.

load the game, start the iff mission, and go past the problem. save and transfer the files again.

i will try this myself when i get on a chance. hope this works for the rest of you.

kilgorek is right. No, a dual core is not $40 on Newegg, Redshaw88, unless you have a motherboard that supports those $40 dual cores. He has a socket 939 which is capable of using a dual core AMD X2, FX-60, or Opteron but those cost over 200$ unless you get a weaker Opteron.

On top of that, he says he just beat the first game, which is on the exact same engine. As much as you or I would like to defend the great Bioware on this, it's a problem.

The point is, I shouldn't have to spend anymore money than I already did on buying the game in the first place.

Or you could follow my instructions on the first page, and play the game...

I didn't pay 65 dollars to play a half ass game, and I also didn't just pay that kind of money to play the game 6 months from now. I paid to play the game NOW.

And before anyone starts talking about min requirements, stop. Dragon Age had dual core requirement listed on the box, but like pretty much any other game, you could still play it. That is a Bioware game that was released like what, 2 months ago? And I can play that game like silk. Same with Mass Effect 1 which uses the same engine. The fact is, is that has nothing to do with the game itself, it's all about a couple loading screens. Screens which I could run fine if it wasn't trying to load something simultaneously in the background. So basically, there is absolutely no reason I shouldn't be able to play this game in it's full glory.

What is really pissing me off is the fact that Bioware should be working on a patch for this as we speak, and it is something that could easily be fixed in the next few days. But they are not going to release a fix for it for months, and may not release one at all. And that is BULL****. Bioware should either deal with this problem now or head to their local P.O. and kindly mail us all 60 dollar refunds.

The -nomovies "fix" is a line you add to a shortcut you create on the target line of the shortcut. Unless you don't trust yourself, it shouldn't require a virus scan (my attempt at humor there....heh). I have been using it and the game itself runs perfectly on my single-core AMD. One of the things I like about it is that it doesn't require any changes to the game files--when the patch arrives, you can just start the game normally. There are issues using this workaround in getting to the Citadel (but you can get there using the "wait for the cinematic on the Press Any Key screen" trick) and starting the IFF mission later in the game (there may be workarounds for that--I haven't gotten there yet). But you can enjoy playing while hoping for a patch which is what I have been doing.

The green screen fix is from a site that some people apparently don't like--I got the feeling it is a hacker site--but don't quote me on that....I think it renames the movie files and replaces them with a green screen--and you need to back the files up so you can use them again when the problem gets patched. The -nomovies method is easy and changes no files so, to me, that is preferable.Image IPB

Well Kilgorek you're right, Bioware made a stupid decision as I don't really see much benefit being derived from their dual-core specific programming. But don't hold your breath for a patch anytime soon. Better to follow Spiro's instructions on page one of the thread and play through the game with the fixes. Yes you'll put up with Lag in sections and the impact of some events especially near the ending will be lessened by laggy vids, but you can play through the game and then just watch the endings etc on you tube lag free for full impact. The game feels pretty epic regardless and you can get back at them in 2 years by buying ME3 used ;)

I have the steam version of this game and I remember there was a launch option that allowed you to skip cut scenes, anyone know the command?
And for the IFF, is there any way to go through without filename manipulation? I just don't trust myself messing with file editing.
