Absolutely. I can't even fathom doing the romance with Jacob. Kaiden was attractive, adorable and loving with a good voice.
Jacob has a nice body and all but I'm not into him or his personality. He's meh. In fact I chose Thane over the human choice ..I'd choose Garrus over him. The only two I wouldn't choose over Jacob would be Mordin and Grunt.

It was a bit silly to see how Kaiden treated Shepard when he first meets him in ME2. "I know where my loyalties lie". He says something like that..doesn't seem to understand that Shepard's allegiance is to humanity as a whole.

ROFL!! I saved his ass so many times on almost EVERY mission so I agree. But my second playthrough I'm going to moon over his photograph and save myself haha.

Maybe that's the point...Kaidan was written and designed for females...never could understand why more guys didn't play a Femshep just to find out what it was that they saw in Kaidan. I would think guys would want to know what turned the girls on but I guess not.
My wife completely disagrees with you. As did I on my Femshep. I purposely started mine with the intention of doing the Kaidan romance. Mainly because his death scene was so good on my first playthrough I thought he earned it.
But the romance was just terrible. You continually felt like you were forcing yourself on him and he didn't want to say he wasn't interested because you were his commanding officer. The only time he ever showed any interest in the relationship seemed to be when he thought Liara was interested in you. And honestly Liara was a much better sport about the whole thing than he was.
Ashley played out much better because she always let you knew where things stood and took the relationship on her own terms. You never felt like she was only going along with it because you were her CO.
The wife's been kicking herself for not going with Liara and attempting to stick it out with Kaidan. Doubly so when she ran into him on Horizon and got that awful letter afterwards. She's keeps saying how much she hopes there will be one of those renegade interrupt actions when she runs into him in ME3.
Can't say I blame her.

You get that with Ashley and it seems more powerful with her, she doesn't value herself much and is determined to throw herself into harms way to redeem her family's name, it's not healthy and it plays a big part in her character. If you spare her on Virmire it really shows, especially if you're romancing her. She has a hard time accepting that someone cares that much about her and that she has more to live for than family glory. I felt it added a lot to that romance, whereas Kaidan in that situation is just like, "Damn, that sucked, thanks for picking me, see ya on the crew deck"
I don't know if Jacob is a much better character but at the very least he feels more friendly and open than Kaidan. He does seem more "buddy" material than romance but that might be because any time femshep pursues any line of questioning into Jakes history or personality she sounds like she's seducing him, it's very off putting. "I just wanted to ask about you, now put your pants back on, please!" >.<

Yes, especially the one from Illium, "I am a biotic god"

People are entitled to their opinions but I loved the ME1 LIs a lot better than ME2. (With the exception of Tali and perhaps Jack.)
In ME1 there was so much more development and build up to the romance.
In ME 2 it goes:
Conversation A: I think I like you.
Conversation B: I know I like you, sex later before we save the universe?
And that's it. Way too forced.

Only I really wouldn't want to romance a Volus.
Oh wait - let me actually be serious for a moment: Jacob seemed like a solid, decent guy - much better man than his father, that's for sure.

There is always an exception to the rule.
As for feeling that you were forcing yourself on him...Kaidan is somewhat shy around women due to his past hurt over Rahna...it really hits home if you do the balcony scene where he puts his foot in his mouth. That is exactly what I liked about the romance...in fact all the romances in the first one you had to kind of work for...even Liara (who some thought was easy) was kind of shy in approaching you to an extent...that's why she checks up on you without your knowledge...she's shy about asking. With these in ME2(from those I've even bothered to pay attention to) you don't have to work for anything...they are practically thrown in your face...there is no challenge whatsoever.

Yeah, the scene on the Citadel was adorable, even Ashley's teasing was too cute. I really appreciated that Kaidan was consistent, in that he showed interest, but he always wanted to be respectful and cautious, due to the regs and his own natural tendency to "always leave a way out".
What everyone is saying about Shepard's body language and dialogue when speaking to Jacob is so true, it's very off putting to want to talk to him about upgrades or something and have Shepard lean over and talk sexy for no reason. She might as well be twirling her hair and licking her lips every time she talks to him. Yuck, that is NOT my Shepard.

Ha. Two friends and I were taking about that. Alistair should make an appearance in ME3. Throw all the fan girls in a tizzy. I'm sure we can modify his King Armor into a space suit right? I'm sure he'll take to e-mail just fine.
However, I like Jacob. He's so sweet and kind and doing his loyalty mission made me like him more. Kaidan can just drop off the face of the planet. I'm so angry with his character I could clip him around the ears.
@TeenZombie - What you said about Shepard is right too. I'm not sure why they decided to trick her out the way they did, but I guess there has to be a reason. My friends said the same thing you said, "She wasn't our Shepard."

Right now my fem Shep is still recovering from Kaidan's brutal rejection, so Jacob comes off as bland. I'm not even a little bit interested, he's a cool guy but he's not all that different from any one else.
One question though about ME2, what's with all the daddy issues? O.o

I never really liked Kaidan, I honestly don't know why but even though I've done the romance with him I just never found him to be a very interesting character. He killed his instructor, had medical troubles from his biotic implants and seems to be rather shy and reclusive, I think that might be part of his appeal as a romance, he's shy and appears embarrassed when called out on his crush on femshep. But it seems like even with romance you never really get in his head and figure out what's the big reasons behind his current state.
You are answering your own question here. He's reclusive because last time he really stepped out and tried for a girl she pushed him away. He killed his instructor, has medical troubles from his biotic implants... I mean, yeah, so he doesn't say much. Your point here confuses me because you are saying you can't get in his head but you just said the reasons he's the way he is right before you made the comment.

Honestly the Balcony scene was the only one where it felt like he was genuinely interested and not like you were forcing yourself on him. The 'always leaving a way out' part drove us both (me/wife) nuts. Even when you specifially are forced to pick between him and Liara he still acts wishy-washy. You have to practially yell at him during the locker scene to get him to man up and act like your romantic interest.
Hell, even in his letter in ME2 he ends it on a wish-washy note. "I've Moved on, I'm dating a doctor...but maaaaaybe..." Didn't even want to commit to a breakup. Ashley's version of the letter came out so much better, and she's admittedly terrible with words.
Compare that to Liara who following your death put herself through hell to get you back. Kaidan really comes out the poorest of the three in the ME1 romance department.

Actually all this means is that they kept him in character...as Shepard said in ME...he agonizes over every decision. Even Tali wouldn't join Shepard right away...she had to get a handle on the fact that Shepard was back. And it's nothing like Liara who knows that Cerberus has Shep. Kaidan has just found out. He's been without her for two years. It will take time to get a handle on the fact that she's back and honestly I'm not sure he fully believes it's Shepard...it's like Aria said anyone could be wearing Shepard's skin. Working for Cerberus is not something that I think Kaidan or Ash for that matter would believe Shep would do.
I think the 'maybe' in the letter may simply be a hint that if you choose a new LI then it's over. The devs said they wanted to see the love story to the end(through ME3) but they said that who you started with may not be who you end with. I think if you choose a new LI, the old LI will probably not even be acknowledged as an LI in anyway in ME3.

Actually Tali didn't join because she had something she promised to do first. She wanted to join you right away when she saw you, and says as much during her recruiting quest. She completely believes its you if you make the right persuasion check. She hated having to run off to do her quest without you. And her logs say how she wished you were there for it.
And remember Tali had more reason to dislike Cerberus than anyone. She purposely came along to watch your back with them. Which is what I expected from Kai/Ash.
I do agree the 'maybe' in the letter was put in for the player's sake to give them an excuse to stay loyal. But in Kaidan's letter it came across as more wishy-washy from him. Ashley's not so much because she hadn't dated, and closed it with a poetry quote.

With Kaidan, I absolutely loved talking to him. Yeah, it gets a bit annoying for him to constantly tell you he's leaving a way out, but that just means he's making you work for his affection (and there better be a great payoff for going through all that and then ignoring Garrus and Thane's romances... they surprisingly both tempted me to break down on my first play through when I was going for Kaidan loyalty). I did the pursuing the first round; it's Kaidan's turn in ME3!
Even setting aside romance aspects for them, Kaidan at least says things to make me see him as an individual. Did Jacob ever even have anything interesting to say? I honestly can't remember much that he talked about, which just shows how very poorly that character interested me. Then add in the awkward feeling of hitting on him when you ask to talk... and later the strange hug and beers on the citadel. Jacob conversations pretty much creeped me out and scarred me lol.

I'm glad he didn't join up with the crew. I'm glad he's doing his own thing. He really believes being in the Alliance is the way to deal with the threat. And he is looking for the proof of the Reapers through those channels. Same goes for Ashley.
Jacob is cool, he's chill. He killed a mess of Batarians and saved the Citadel too. But he gave up on the Alliance. He doesn't trust cerberus, but he thinks thats the only way to get things done.
Ultimately, it will be the choice of your Shepard that decides who is going to be "right" here in ME3, if either of them are.
I think both characters are complex, but they are more subtle than the others in your crew. They are probably more like you and I than you might realize.

- Personality-wise, they're nice people, who want to help others and do the right thing
- Mild-mannered and down to earth, with experience that makes them capable of understanding the bigger picture.
- No huge, overwhelming skeletons in their closets. Jacob lost his father, and Kaiden got a bit abused during biotic training, both of which are fairly tame compared to say, Ashley's family getting blacklisted or Miranda being a test-tube child.
- Both are well-adjusted. Neither has overarching self-esteem issues or big problems with what happened to them in their past, they've both moved on.
These points combined lead to Kaiden and Jacob being the most well-rounded and balanced people in both ME1 and 2...unfortunately, this also tends to make them look boring compared to everyone else.

Yeah, my Shepard is more of a "Black-asian" hybrid. That would be... Blasian? I dunno. I really like Jacob.
