I'm thinking about trying to start a forum based roleplay based on the Mass Effect universe with some friends that I know. I'm out of ideas on how to make a convincing story that would deal with a small group of protagonists instead of Shepard and still have the plot not suck. I thought I would ask here since everyone here has a good grasp on the Mass Effect lore.

No, I'm not starting a roleplay here. That would be stupid. I'm just seeking advice from people who know what they're talking about.
