You need to talk to another dwarf in the Orzammar slums while Leliana is in your group/your romance I believe. The Dwarf you're looking for is standing next to a couple of dead nugs.
That's how its done, though I would strongly recommend saving first, watch the cutscene and then reload. That #$@& nug makes non-stop squeaking/snuffling/grunting sounds that are extraordinarily annoying made even more so by the fact that you can hear them throughout the entire camp. And even worse there is no way to get rid of the thing.
I makes going to camp absolute hell.

Also you do not have to be romancing Leliana to get it. It will up her liking you though.

2) You must ask Leliana while there what she knows about Orzammar.
3) You must enter Dustown and locate the "Idle Dwarf" that is halfway between the shop and the "corner" where you find Zerlinda.
4) Start a conversation with the Idle Dwarf and you _should_ get a line of dialogue about Nugs as pets.
********
As far as I know, once you've given the Cute Nug to Leliana, it survives to the end. (It was present in the Post-Coronation scene.) The exception to this is when the Camp gets attacked. (Bodahn & Sandal are also absent during that sequence, but they reappear in Camp the next time after you leave and return.)

They actually mentioned nug-gets somewhere. Possibly in the Codex.Siradix wrote...
Or they just wanted to make a chicken nugget joke. ; )
I for one has no problem with the sound the nug makes, and I don't know how a 'nug' can be racial slur.
All I did to get a cute nug was to first speak with the Nug-wrangler in the Commons, hunted some, then found the Idle dwarf. I think Leliana said she wanted one when speaking with the Nug-wrangler. I then let the Idle dwarf hunt one for me.

...because if that gets rid of the nug noise I will likely do that on next playthrough...I know from the Wiki that it's possible to give a nug to the Werewolf emissary for him to eat, but I've not actually figured out how to do that.

That's exactly where it is, under books titled In Praise of the Humble Nug.

No, I have yet to do that. I don't have cocersion or the influence to get them to attack.

A) somewhere near your nug-in-Camp situation, might you have loaded a pre-nug acquisition Save and then continued the game from there?
Just grasping at straws here.

Has your camp site been attacked yet? Perhaps it ran away during the attack; everyone at your campsite can basiclly defend themself execpt the Nug.

No, I never went to a different save. I've had the nug sense the beginning. I think I got it right after Lothering and I have been romancing Leliana so she never left.
- Also I was attacked. I think that is when it may have dissapeared, but I couldn't be certain.

It's a one time dialog option, and you have to have a boxed nug in your inventory (or at least I did). It doesn't take one out of your inventory though, and has no discernable effects other than being comical.

1) The _cute_ nug is gotten strictly from the Idle Dwarf. (As opposed to the several mundane nugs that you catch and sell to the nug wrangler near the entrance to the Diamond Quarter, for 12 silver each.)AlgolagniaVolcae wrote...

2) I think you might be able to dicker on the price, but I always have to pay the Idle Dwarf 20 silver for having gotten me the cute nug.
3) The cute nug is one of Leliana's major gifts that comes with a cut scene when you give it to her. Which means that it's worth between 6 and 13 Approval points. (Depends on how many gifts you've already given her.)
