I've played up to Ilium only to have the game crash mid fight only to have it crash now when ever I try to start the game the game crashes without any explanation. I have updated my display drivers twice now and the crossfire hot fix does not apply to my system. As soon as I press "any key to continue" to the main menu the screen goes black and then the game stops working. My game is a disk copy for PC, not through steam and it is v1.00. Below is my dx diag with all my system specs and the like

first of all: bump doesn't help

second of all: you have a quad core as well - I'm just in the process of making sure that Bioware acknowledges the fact - that we are experiencing two kinds of crashes here....one for single cores (and multi-cores which dont recognize all cores) - and a seperate crash (like with you and me) - with multi-cores (that have all cores recognized).

I hope their checking it out

Does yours give you any explanation or does it just say "Mass Effect 2 stopped working Microsoft is attempting to find a solution to your problem"?

A friend of mine is having this issue as well on Windows XP. All cores are recognized on his Phenom II 955. He'll load his game and try to land on Korlus, and then the game will crash showing the shuttle loading screen with the "Microsoft is attempting to find a solution to your problem". If he reinstalls the game, the crashing goes away, only to reappear in a different location. My copy is working fine, and the only difference between our systems is I am running Windows 7 64-bit not XP-32bit, and I have an ATI 5800 series not 4800 series.

I've read this can be caused by a corrupted save file. Back up your saves, empty your save folder, then reintroduce them one by one until you find the culprit - although generally it's the latest save that's at fault. That way you won't have to replay from the beginning (and you probably won't have to reinstall).
