I'm thinking it would consist ot the PC handing him the cup, Alistair saying something about it, a reaction from the PC (either gesture or 'spoken'), and that's it. There won't be much I can have Alistair say, so it will mostly have to rely on his expression to be effective.
How to make a new conversation between the PC and a party member

This is WAY out of my league, but I'd like to try anyway. Worst case secnario, I learn a lot.
Anyway, I'd like to add a scene between the PC and Alistair when he is given the joining cup and I have absolutely no idea where to start. Ideas? Links to tutorials? The ones I've found, like creating a quest giver and a conversation aren't telling me how to deal with a party member, unless I'm missing something.

You might try getting ahold of the guy who runs the site http://www.dragongaming.co.uk/ - he seems pretty amiable to taking requests on making tutorials on "How do to X" with the toolset and I think most of his tutorials are really well done. Heck, he might have already made one (I haven't watched all of his).

I have wondered the same. So far i only know, that you have to find the "conversation", this is in the resource palette if you didnt know.
I figured there are many different conversations for a party member, but a big main conversation. I dont know what the joining cup is you mean, but so far i had some success at least finding the right conversation ,by thinking who else is involved in it. For example i looked for the phylactery conversation in the elf ruins, where party members give their opinions, and the conversation is belonging to the phylactery actually. ( so when you click on it, the conversation with your party members start)
But then ,it dont know anymore. I have seen a mod which adds dialog but what it does is edit and export the full main conversation and this isnt compatible with the language version of my game. And if i do it myself, it isnt compatible either. Seems the toolset forgets about language hmpf.
I guess if you want to give Alistair something, it could be a dialogline like "give Alistair this or that", when the next dialogline is the response.
I dont know if there is a way to add dialoglines ,without exporting the original one thou because of the errors.

@Eshme, the "joining cup" is in RtO.
@errant_knight, I have only dabbled a little with the toolset, but I've noticed that anything related to DLC doesn't load into the toolset like the vanilla game does. (I wanted to see about making new crystals for Shale, but all Shale references I find in the game seem to be the stuff that was cut.)
Assuming you do find a way to get at the the item inside the DLC, and that no one gives you better advice, I suggest you look at the other gifts in the game that trigger special reactions. Without checking them, my first guess would be that they have some script attached to them which is triggered when they are used as gifts to the appropriate party member,

Thanks guys! I'd need the gift script from RtO, I think, and figured I could adapt the Duncan's shield video-assuming I can have direct control of the character animation... Maybe I better get more conversant with more basic stuff, then try what you've suggested, especially that tutorial site.
Thanks again for your suggestions!
