According to this, the Vindicator is BETTER than the Revenant machine gun! And the Carnifex Pistol is the BEST weapon in the game save for the sniper rifles.

This makes me want to ask...Should I get the Revenant Machine gun? Or the Widow Sniper Rifle?

Before closing, I will mention one other thing though.  It's the closest thing I've seen to a genuine problem with ME2's weapons system.  From what I've seen so far, I am VERY underwhelmed by shotguns.  It seems to me that they are trying to overcompensate for how unbalanced they were in the first ME.  They fixed the range issue that shotguns had in the last game (BIG TIME... they are almost useless farther away than 10 feet), but they reduced their damage as well.  So, as near as I can tell, shotguns are slow-firing, short-range, weapons with poor armor penetration that are totally outclassed by almost every other weapon in the game.  They aren't even that great at Husk-killing (a role they formerly excelled at).

It's true- shotguns are quite underpowered compared to the killing potential of all the other guns. The problem is really twofold: First off the combat mechanics have changed to favour cover-based standoffs where medium to long-range accuracy is key. At the same time, ranged accuracy has been reduced all around- recall that in ME1 good pistols could be used as sniping tools, being effective at all but the most extreme ranges. But pistols and SMGs retains effectiveness at medium range and beyond, making them usable in most cover-based standoffs of ME2. The shotgun, OTOH, now wildly inaccurate at anything past a few meters range, has become exclusively an assault weapon for taking on enemies in entrenched positions at point blank or used when defending from the same type of attacks. However, it should be noted that this is a function the SMG (especially the upgraded variant) also performs admirably.

In particular the claymore seems like a waste. It's useful because it offers potentially the most damaging alpha strike in the game, but when you consider that you have to be at point blank range to achieve this and that the DPS, it quickly becomes apparent that it is quite underpowered compared to the other weapons it should compare to, namely the widow and revenant. The widow, with comparable refire rate and ammo, does over 90% of the claymore's potential top damage. It's hard to see why soldiers would pick the claymore over a widow or revenant, and for vanguards the vindicator is probably a better choice as well.

Shotguns need to become slightly more powerful at short range, slightly more accurate at medium range, and the claymore needs an additional boost to justify going for it over the alternatives.

The description doesn't say "The Carnifex HP is the upgrade of the Predator HP", or "The Carnifex HP is better than the Predator HP",  it says that the Carnifex HP "upgrades the Predator HP". The phrasing implies that when you acquire certain new weapons, the older ones actually get better as well. Which would obviously have an impact on any number crunching.

Of course, it might just mean what you said and be really, really bad phrasing if what they meant was: "this is an improvement over the previous weapon".

Never read it that way, but see what you mean. Doesn't make any sense to me for it to actually upgrade the original weapon though (why should it?) - and since all upgrades normally specify exactly what is upgraded (eg +20% damage, +50% ammo cap) I doubt it works like this. So imo this is just bad phrasing.

Let's compare the best weapons of ME & ME2
Spectre - Master Gear Level X vs the various ones in ME2

FYI when I say clipsize for the Spectre weapons I mean shot before overheat. Also comparing ME pistol to ME2 Heavy Pistol. Submachine guns are not being considered at all since there is no equivalent in ME

Vindicator                                    HMWA X
damage 36.8                               384
clip size 24                                   77

Carnifex Hand Cannon               HMWP X
damage 85.4                               294
clip size 6                                     29

Claymore Heavy Shotgun           HMWSG X
damage 50.1                               378
clip size 1                                     7

Widow Anti-Material Rifle          HMWSR X
damage 368.3                            336
clip size 1                                    2

With the exception of the Widow Anti-Material Rifle, Spectre - Master Gear Level X wins in every category.

Unless they changed how stats are calculated, Shepard and company had some seriously weaker weapons available.
