I went into the room with the dead caste relic in stealth mode and the combat music played and all these red dots appeared, but none of the statues moved or became attackable.  So I grabbed the last armor piece (I have gauntlets, boots, armor and helmet, so unless there's a shield or weapon, I'm complete) and touched the relic but nothing seems to have happened.  My quest book says something about "if there is proof of its existence", so
I went back to the Shaperate, but couldn't get any dialogue options to open.

Someone must wear the armor - the whole set, not just have it in inventory - for the Gangue Shade. For the other quest, you select the memories, to the right of the Shaper, to complete the quest.

You can buy the shield from Ruck, but it isn't needed for the quest or the set bonus.

If you use the helmet hack and don't have it disabled for massive helms, you cannot complete this quest either. To me, it's a small price to pay not to have to look at those ugly helms! This probably isn't your issue, but I'd throw it out there just in case.

actually the quest is completed after you get the medailon in the coffin behind the doors that the 2 huge ogres guard and then turn it in at the shaperate, no need to fight that shade at all. Also like mentioned, the shade only appears after equiping the armour set and then touch the relic.

Right. You need the armor and the medallion, else the shade won't appear.

Get the armor set (no need for the shield)

Get the key from the altar along with the last armor piece

Go out of the room and unlock the other big door

Go ahead until you come to a coffin

Get the insignia

If you want to fight the shade, do as Gwinever said, but it may or may not drop anything, and if it does it's only minor stuff.

In the shaperate, go to the memories book, and activate it.

Ah, thanks. I tried talking to everybody at the Shaperate. I didn't go to the book.
