Bioware so thx for it!
Warning: Will contain lots of Spoilers!
I enjoy Bioware games. Why? Well it’s the experience I get when playing. I very
few games I grow "attached" to my characters, I like the conversations
with them, their stories, helping them etc. Story is a major element. It's just
not another game you save the galaxy yay yay yay and you just don't feel like
you experienced something just had some fun and that’s it. In ME I get involved
at a completely different level and I love that feeling!
ME2 is one of the best games I played. I remember enjoying me so much only with
classic titles back 10 years ago. Until now, I would remember games like
Freelancer, Diablo2, Starcraft, KOTOR and many others and sigh, because "they
don't make games like that anymore". There are great games, but they just
don't bring as much pleasure as they used to. ME2 goes into the list of games,
that surpass the experience and feelings/fun I got from those old classics.
This based on my play through that is my first and my perfect one. I will
continue playing with it on ME3.
While initially I was sad and disappointed as my old team from ME1 would not
come back, when I started playing I did meet them eventually (except for Ashley
in my case, which died). A large portion of the game is recruitment and loyalty
missions, so team is a very important aspect. Overall I liked the new team. I hope
that in ME3 the team will be mix of ME1+ME2, after all – in both we gathered teams
half of the game, in last part it just would be redundant and silly to get a
new team again (for 3rd time).
The addition of loyalty quests was good move. Since they are
optional, you are not forced to take them, however the survival chances of your
last mission are influenced by that. I did every mission and everyone survived.
The missions were diverse and not repetitive and very enjoyable.
The new Normandy. An awesome ship! I liked the upgrade idea,
and the resource gathering. It was boring to get resources in the end, but at
least unlike in ME1, they weren’t pointless. I remember driving in my Mako to
get those resource nodes, medallions, writings and other stuff – in the end it
didn’t mean anything in ME1. Oh yeah – I miss Mako!!! Would be fun to get some
DLC and drive around shoot some heretic Geth bases that are left. The addition
of weapon lab, science lab, other areas of the ship are welcome. Although I
have to say engineering in ME1 was far better looking than in ME2. The thing
that disappointed was that Normandy MK2 is 2x the size of the original one, but
it doesn’t “feel” that much bigger.
Exploration. Resource gathering, now with meaningful use is
a good idea, but it got boring in the end (I got the 100% exploration). What
was awesome was that when you scan you can get an event, like an old ship ready
to fall, a crash site of a Quarian scout ship and other encounters. This was awesome,
wish there were more. What I would love is random space encounters while you
are flying. Exploration in clusters, to detect hidden systems for DLC would be
good.
Dialogs and voice acting are done very well. During loyalty missions
the voice acting like Tali, left me speechless.
I miss the old Citadel, presidium, the wards. The current
one feels very small. I hope they add more to it, as it is after all the
center.
The plot was dine nicely as well. Some unexpected events
like your crew getting kidnapped, finding a derelict reaper. In the end it was
a bit different then ME1.
While during the game you made choices regarding your team,
in ME1 you made choices that impacted others more. It was nice to read and hear
on galactic news, some event results, like solving the kidnapped politician and
biotic conflict in peaceful way, then getting a letter from him, hearing how
biotics getting paid compensations etc. The message from the Rachni queen and
many many other decisions. Oh yeah – don’t forget the fan from citadel, now
with copy N7 armor being tough guy
expect many of the decision from ME1, along with ME2 decisions will carry onto
final ME3. How will Bioware do it I have no idea. After all the whole team
might die, with only joker being left – I can’t imagine what will happen (time
travel to save them this time??). I don’t want to gather another team in my ME3
play through, because that would ruin the final game. I mean to surpass ME2,
Bioware will have to bring something very very awesome. ME3 should be (ME1+ME2)x3
in size an awesomeness, because it’s the end of story, the big finale, the end!
When I think about the choice impact it reminds me a tree.
First we had ME1 that was the trunk. Choices we made in branched out into a
small tree and here comes ME2, which has even more important decisions/outcomes
like survival of the crew, were they loyal, was the base destroyed/purged from
collectors. Paragon vs renegade outcomes. It will be very hard to develop a
game. I expect even the final outcome in ME3 will be influenced by
paragon/renegade (save or destroy or life and become reaper yourself etc – pure
speculation on my part). I play only one side, the paragon. In ME series,
KOTOR, Dragon Age, because I simple can’t force myself to be renegade, I just can’t.
I know I’m limiting my experience of the whole game, but it wouldn’t be fun for
me taking that path.
I’ve read there will be full expansion for ME2, as I expect
reapers to take time to get the old “fly here” way. So in mean time there a lot
to do. Showing illusive man the finger and going your own way, going back to specter.
Whats wrong with the star, that Tali was researching on. Geth heritics vs
normal geth. A lot of room for DLC with ME2.
I just have a couple of request for ME3 (which is 2-3 years
away
DLC later, then ME1 + ME2. Don’t force us to make a completely new team, if others
survived. I wish team ME1 and ME2 would be combined, because they are awesome! We’ve
been with the team through so much, its much more awesome to see it to the end
with them, then some new rookies. Make it not only combat, but diplomacy, like
geth and quarians conflict. Helping Wrex unite krogan (or whoever is in his place
if people killed him). Explore and search for new tech (in omega perhaps, among
derelict ships). Don’t add absolute choices, that is like Kaidan vs Ashley – 1 must
die. The ME2 ending where everyone can die/survive is much better, so I don’t
want to see the choice save either Turian colonies or Asari. I wish it would be
like Dragon Age, where you united the galaxy (feralden) to fight the common
foe, but the uniting process is not the only theme or idea of the game, like in
Dragon Age. It’s cliché, but if done correctly it will be magnificent. One last
thing – can it be massive? Don’t want to fight extremely large battles, but
would be nice to see those fight in background. And yeah Longer cut scenes when
ships are fighting!
I think I missed some things I liked, so I will add later,
but overall ME2 surpassed the original and is in my TOP 5 games of all time.
What’s your experience? Did ME2 reach your expectations? Was
it fun to play? Share some stuff of what you liked in ME2, what you miss from
ME1 and what you are looking for in the future!
