I have about 1 FPS in Mass Effect 2 after the Bioware and EA movies play at the start of the game, basically from the 'Press any key to continue' screen. The sound plays fine and so do the Bink videos (the Bioware and EA logo movies), but as soon as anything is rendered the slowdown begins.
OS: Windows 7 64 Bit
CPU: Quad Core i7 @ 2.67Ghz
RAM: 6.0Gb
VIDEO: nVidia GeForce 295 GTX with latest nVidia 196.21 drivers
As you can see, my system is clearly way above the recommended requirements, which is why this problem is even more frustrating!!!
I have tried modifying every setting, changing the options in the nVidia Control Panel and the ME2 Config Utility; windowed, low settings, everything.
Please HELP!

I had a similar problem, but our computers are nothing alike. However, in my case it was a program called "Voddler" that caused the slowdown. For... Some reason.

I have the same problem... even thought its with mass effect 1. ( i dont know if this is offtopic...?)
Anyway. I tried to close a lot of programs and such and i must say i saw an improvement in the FPS... but its still unplayable
(i closed programs such as skype, MSN, antivirus, system-tweaking-programs and so on)
I guess its a problem in both games. Some engine or something that is the same in both games. I hope you find a solution.

Bluestone, did you ever find a solution to this problem? I just got ME 2, and am experiencing the exact same symptoms.

What seems to have worked for me in general slow down during the game at random, for-no-good-reason to very-good-reason points, is ctrl+alt+deleting and setting Mass Effect 2's priority in the processes menu to High from low-priority.
