Hi All,

aside from Jaeed, is it compulsory to recruit everyone, even if you don't want them on your team at all?

I thought that was the point, building a team that you think you can trust and then earning their trust.

I haven't recruited Jack yet, but having read the novels, I really don't care too. The story seems to have hit a dead end now with no more missions coming in aside from recruit Jack, recruit Jaeed and go get the collectors.

If it is compulsory I'll do it, but frankly it would lay waist to building your own team :-/

I can't say for certain but I think you are required to recruit X amount of squad members to progress to the next part of the story. In other words, to get to each point of plot advancement you'll have to recruit a certain number of squad members. This is just speculation, though. You might need to recruit everyone or you might be able to get away only recruiting three people all game. I don't rightfully know. I am just speculating based on the story structure I recall from my first play-through.

No, but I think your chance of surviving will be greatly reduced.

I can confirm your statement is wrong.

I can't confirm exactly as am not sure whether Zaeed falls into the mix.

But I went into the final mission without Samara, Legion or Tali.

People have stated that once you do Horizon if you do 5 missions, you then get the collector mission, now am not sure if this is taking into account releasing Grunt. But basically I did all but 2 of the N7 missions and did the loyalty quests for all the other party members including Zaeed, with grunt not released and didn't get the collector mission, I released Grunt and so since that completed the 'Dr Okeer's Legacy' quest and gave me 7 standard members + Zaeed, that seemed to unlock the collector ship mission, did that, then of course after the IFF mission need to complete 2 missions to unlock the joker event. At the time I didn't realise there were 2 N7 missions remaining and so decided to get Grunt's loyalty, then I noticed the system where I hadn't fully explored that has 2 N7 missions (the one with the mining robot and one with the platform that needs the shielding activating), so I did the first one then went to do the 2nd one but of course got the joker event. I then immediately went through the relay without Samara or Tali (Legion of course was no longer an option as I'd sent him back to Cerberus).

Funny thing is, I still have their dossiers in my open journal after finishing the end game mission. Tempted to go see if can do them to see if there is any alteration in lines due to the mission being over hehe

But as mentioned, I am going to guess that Zaeed doesn't count and that you need 7 members.

To some extent if you think about it, it makes sense for a 'completion' point of view, because during the vent bit, you have shep with 2 people, someone in the vents and the other team (another 3 man party). During the biotic bit, replace the vent runner with the biotic, then at the end, one goes off with the crew, whilst you have your team and 3 others defend the door.

I think that the only ones you must recruit are Mordin, Garrus, Grunt and Jack

But, you'll have very little chances of surviving the suicide mission

You recruit them because of their skills, not because you like/dislike them

Besides, why would you want to miss out on parts of the game?

Fair enough, I am early on. I have recruited Garrus, Mordin and Grunt. Jacob and Miranda are auto recruited. I still have Jaeed and Jack outstanding.

I will recruit Jack and see what happens.

Thanks for the advice.

p.s. I wish Bioware would add a search option. I don't like duplicating threads.

They did have a search option but it was buggy as hell which is why I think they have removed it (hopefully a temporary thing).

Technically you don't need to recruit Zaeed as he is DLC.

If you get Jack, you'll move on to another mission, I won't spoil it for you, then after that you get some more dossiers. I'm tempted on one of my future playthroughs to test out my theory again. I was a tiny bit annoyed when I ran into the predicament I encountered and so knowing what I know now, can map out any similar playthroughs better.

@DarthCaine as to why people would want to 'miss out' on stuff, maybe because they are RPing and wouldn't dream of recruiting certain people. There was no way my Renegade FemShep that I imported from ME was going to recruit Tali. It irked me a little bit how not giving her the data in the first game didn't seem to make a difference in the initial encounter with her. Specially when I said that Veetor needed to come back with Cerberus... would've expected a "Typical Shepherd not caring about us Quarians" kinda thing... darn straight tali, my shep don't like you much

Never really thought of testing it but am sure I've heard someone say you can end up with Garrus dead on his recruitment mission by allowing his health bar to drop to zero. Be interesting to see if that is possible and if it affects the 2nd unlock and if so in what way ie. do you need to still need to recruit 3 others besides Miranda, Jacob, Mordin and Jack or just 2.

I can't believe that Grunt is necessary, if there was it just seems odd that they would give us an option to leave him in the lifepod. The only reason I think it was on mine was because I didn't recruit Tali or Samara. I do have a savepoint just before I released him, partially tempted to go to it and see if recruiting Samara unlocks the Collector mission as well. Though I think I'll just save it for a possible future playthrough.

Bang on, I usually Role Play games on the first play through for the experence. I used to play DnD when I was in my teens, half my life ago :(, hence that view.

I had built up ME2 in my mind as having that genuine choice. In ME1 it didn't seem like there was much of a reason not to collect everyone. It seemed that with characters like Jaeed/Jack a :innocent: Paragon might not recruit them and, I imagine, Renegades wouldn't want Liara/Tali for equal reasons.

Thanks for the replies.

i think minimal number of companions the game let you go with is 8, so even if you screw up everything, you still have 2 people for the boss fight. And im pretty sure Zaeed actually counts.
