I understand the ME1 love interest's position better than I understand Shepard's, honestly. If I had had any say, I would have gone straight to Arcturus Station as soon as I had control of the Normandy, and I would have talked to Alliance leaders about my status, how I could continue to serve, and whether I should go along with Cerberus, or blow them off. In short, I would have acted like a soldier, and obeyed the chain of command, no matter what the extenuating circumstances. The fact that I couldn't do something like that, and the fact that I was never given an explanation WHY I couldn't do something like that, was maddening.
So when Kaidan or Ashley hear these rumors, and suspect that Shepard has been alive all this time, and working for Cerberus, I don't mind that they get a little emotional when they meet up. In fact, their responses to the situation are more realistic than Tali or Garrus.
Realistc has got nothing to do with it. Personalities differ - just because not everyone reacts the same way to a specific situation doesn't make their reaction any less realistic. Tali and Garrus weren't lacking in emotion, but they do come across as being more level headed. If that is their personality, that's their personality. I'm not the sort of person who would start out being accusatory as Ashley/Kaiden did because that's just not the way I do things. I'd have questions and I'd be wary, but I also want to believe in the good of people, especially someone I know and trust, so I'm not going to make a scene without getting an explanation first.
Not all relationships have to have such catastrophic breakdowns in the middle of them...I know people, my parents specifically, who would not have treated the situation that way. If you love someone you've got to trust them and give them the benefit of the doubt.
And relying on rumors is really a bad idea. But I fully expect everything will be cleared up for all the ME1 romances in ME3. I'm not saying that Ashley/Kaiden are bad people - I'm just saying that, me personally, I wouldn't stand for it in a relationship. I sympathize with their situation to an extent, but when it comes to a romantic level, that's not good enough.
I was also under the impression that the Alliance was being just as big a pain in the ass about the Reapers as the Council in trying to cover it up. Anderson tells you as much - the Alliance is blowing it off, which is why you're working with Cerberus, because they're not. Not to mention, you do have the choice of funneling information to the Alliance instead of giving it straight over to Cerberus.
I don't care for Cerberus and what they do, which is why it's so satisfying to use them for the good of the Galaxy, and then flip them the bird when it's done.
