First playthrough as a Dalish Male and ended up almost inadvertantly romancing Morrigan. I didn't like her at all upon initially meeting but as things progressed and she started opening up to my character that totally changed. Her finally telling me she loved me at the end of the game was such a great moment. We performed the ritual as she suggested and even though she left, I swore I'd find her and even left Alistair alone to reform the Wardens to pursue my quest.
Second playthrough, this time as a female Dwarven Noble, I knew I was going after Leliana. Unfortunately I hit the advance things too fest "bug" so just to see all of what that relationship had to offer I actually started my game all over again just for her. I can easily see why some people would call Leliana a flat boring character, that's how she seemed in my first game, but that really does all change if you invest time and effort into a relationship with her. Come the end of things, I left Denirrim to my friend King Alistair and Annora, his queen. The Wardens could wait as Leliana and I went off to travel the world together.
Special props have to be given to Alistair. Never did really pursue a relationship with him but, man, he would not take no for an answer with my lady dwarf.. I think he approached me 3 separate times (once with his rose, once to ask to sleep with me, and once to tell me he loved me) and I had to shut him down each time. I love the character though. Complex and well written. Certainly easy to see how anyone would swoon over him. Instead I had the predictably fun task of trying to convince him sleeping with Morrigan on the night before the battle was a good thing.
As for it changing my actual gameplay.. I suppose it did, at least in my second game. I was already the tank, but I'd run halfway across the battlefield through a horde of darkspawn if I saw Leliana's lifebar drop even one bit.
