If I install this DLC, am I able to take my character outside of the castle from a 'Post Coronation' save? Currently doing so shows the epilogue and rolls the credits. Do I have to start a new character to get access to it?

You can always load a pre-final battle save, go to Ostagar, and then go to Denerim.

That's unfortunate. I was under the impression that DLC would allow me continue the adventure.

The automatic post epilogue save should allow you to access the DLC.
