I agree, size of the world and story shouldn't suffer for graphics.

That said... the Dragon age folks should hire some of the Drakensang art People. Their world was huge + beautiful, I couldn't believe some of the amazing landscapes. The story left alot to be desired though :P

I would prefer that they focus their efforts on improving the fluidity of the game and the richness of the content rather than the darn graphics. As it is I've got all the graphics turned to the minimum and I am pretty sure that my machine is capable of better perfomance.

good thing that the people responsible for graphics, engine etc are usually not responsible for game content or story.

True, but there is usually a finite budget for any project. And while I don't buy the people resource issue for the reason you mention, it is still money that gets budgeted into something less important than story, game balance, or a host of other issues. Honestly I think the game looks fine as is. With some optimization of the engine, I think DA2 would look substantially better just like BG2 looked much better than BG1.

this is what happens when art gets outsourced.

I partially agree... but the fact that they have the engine built now, which I'm sure was where a lot of the effort and thus resources were spent to begin with, I'm more inclined to feel that the budget will reflect this and each 'department' will have on average the equivalent again to spend on a sequel, and therefore an equivalent for the total project (they are unlikely to put more resources in to something that is virtually guaranteed to sell more than the first, unless it's advertising, and are more likely to seek to maximise profits by cutting corners, after all they already have their market)... so increasing the demands on a particular department will in most likelyhood, either through design or necessity, be done at the cost of another...... and unfortunately in the situation we have now where the more complex games are in demand by only the minority of a total market, then it's the complexity and depth that is far more likely to suffer.. in fact we are already seeing a shift in design ethos to suit the more casual player.

I see a lot of "greed" arguments in there and those more often than not are restuls of sterotypical thoughts than actual facts. I can't really argue anything factual here though simply because there are no reliable numbers out there in terms of units shipped, copies sold per platform, and at this moment I have no idea on their goal, target audience, and overall philosophy for the sequel. All these things will have a dramtic effect on the allocated budget and direction of the game.

But don't be naive and automatically fall into the "greed' arguments and theories as a subsitute for "I don't know", there are games out there that have great graphics and deep gameplay including those that cater to a niche group, and there are sequels where the graphics have been improved along side the core of the game. There is history that shows it could go both ways as well as stick somewhere in the middle.

Well if they can make the grapics AND gameplay superior to DA:O then I'm all for it. If its one or the other, i.e. Graphics over gameplay, then drop the graphics guys. Gameplay counts, leave the shiny graphics for the console plays :P

if you consider "shiny"  console....i shudder to think what your PC specs are.... PC's have become extremely affordable in the past 2 years.

I'm not worried. Mass Effect 2 has better graphics AND better gameplay than ME 1.

agree with Maria Caliban.

better graphics don't mean less story. Besides, all can be fixed with disc swaps for console players.

three disc swaps during a 80 hour gameplay shouldn't annoy anyone who isn't a lazy f**k

Really AC2 set the bar?! Really?!

Your kidding me right. Yes it looked beautiful but will never EVER get over that time gap and the dlc that they want me to buy to make me fill it. BS
