I'm having trouble unlocking it. Could my romancing Alistair have something to do with it?
In the Prima game guide is says to activate the sidequest Alistair has to have revealed his parentage, but he hasn't yet, although his approval is somewhere in the 80s. I've tried talking to him both in camp and in party but there's never a dialogue option for anything related to his family. I do remember early in the game (Lothering) he talked about Arl Eamon but he didn't say anything about who his father was.
Am I missing something or do I just have to be a bit more patient?

Have you gone to Redcliffe yet? That's where he talked about it to me.

For him to talk to you about his parentage, you have to be in good terms with him and go to Redcliffe. As soon as you get there he will tell you about it and subplot will continue going from there, next time he mentioned sister was at the camp for me.

Thanks guys! I hadn't made it to Redcliffe yet, but the dialogue popped right up when I did.

Having a similar problem, but I finished Redcliffe, Mage tower and just got the ashes and I'm in the process of bringing them back. His approval is a 100 and he adores me. Haven't slept with him (though I can, I'm waiting for him to bring it up), but gave him his mother's amulet, etc. but no sidequest popup! When I got to Redcliffe the first time his approval was in the high 60s but he didn't bring it up. Anyone know if I can still get this sidequest? Any ideas? T__T In my first game it popped right up when I entered Redcliffe, even though I had turned his romance down.

you have to be on good terms with him? are you sure?
as I was an absoutely jerk to him start to finish and Recliffe was one of the last places I went to

I had something odd occur on this quest. When we get to Denerim, and to a certain person's house, instead of going in, he gets cold feet and talks himself out of it. I think perhaps my approval rating with him at the time was too low? I haven't tried just entering the house to see if the quest automatically picks up or not...
