I know there is diminishing returns on giving gifts, but what about just talking to them?
I only talk to my companions at camp and only do one conversation chain thing. Can I talk to them more often? Is there a penalty for talking with them too much in a short amount of time?
I'm asking because the only other BioWare game I've played is KotOR and I didn't get very far in. I know that when you
were talking with Carth and learning more about him, after a bit of
talking he would say something about getting on with the mission and
would only say that for awhile afterwards, so you had to wait a bit to
talk to him again. Does Dragon Age do the same thing?
Possible to talk to companions too much?

not really though some conversations will only happen when certain other things happen first

All of the characters have a few little separate talking scenes (except un-(b)romanced Alsitair). But, for the most part (and as far as I know), the dialogue tree you get them with is the only one they have. Alistair will talk about the Wardens, Leliana will sing stories, Wynne will talk about the Circle, etc. :c

All romancible characters (except Zevran for some reason) have a good deal to talk about.
However, yes, the party members typically have only so much you can talk about, like Kotor. However, new dialog trees seem to come about far more often in DA:O then kotor.
Because it's restricted no you cannot talk to them to much.
