Also, I found difficulty actually lacking on normal. Once i shifted it up to hard it was a little more on par with my own play level. but that's me personally. i still have trouble on nightmare.

Seriously, though - just get used to the game. Even if you die 300 times it doesn't matter in the long-run.

No most, WoW players play it and they think what real RPGs means

Admittedly even people who play WoW don't know how to play WoW. 4 hour fail PUG FTW!!!
Anyway, here are some tips to win:
Use crowd control. Sleep, Waking Nightmare, Paralyize. Use just use a good healer.
Get your tank to use threaten and taunt so that you don't have to heal everyone.
Focus fire. Have tactics set up that everyone attacks the target of the tank. It's more efficient to kill one at a time than to kill everyone at once, also keeps aggro on the tank. Set up characters to use a health potion at 25% health. Least powerful.
Pause the game, study what is happening, adjust accordingly, use skills available. Try to kill mages first as they tend to be a headache. You could also CC them if they are too far away. I don't know, that's all I got.

Actually I raided in WoW for years, and in FFXI prior to that, and EQOA before that. If you're familiar with MMOs you can easily approach DA much the same way when it comes to party tactics and boss fights.

Call me crazy but I found the similarities to WoW's combat kind of nice since I did actually enjoy the tactical side of WoW or at least the group dynamics. I often said I wished I could just tank every so often without giving my life away. Now I can!

On my last run on hard, I tried to play everything in real time without using pause and that was very difficult/cumbersome. Thats the real challenge in the game imo.

Haha yeah, when I first started playing DA I thought "Hey this is like playing WoW but without the terrible people." It's more fun to heal Alistair than say...cocky guild MT. <_<

I actually would avoid reading the spoilers section here. Goofing up your first character is no big deal-- but the game shines in narrative and you can only read a book for the first time once. I envy people who watched Psycho for the first time not knowing about the shower scene or Norman's mother. Spoilers spoil.
That said, there are a few good spoiler free guides out there. This one talks about how to build characters:
http://www.gamefaqs....le/950916/58309
And here's a general tips guide I found useful:
http://social.biowar...66/index/266227
I also liked the IGN guide:
http://guides.ign.co...217/page_2.html
Again, don't stress too much the first playthrough, just enjoy yourself. After that, come back and read all about how to solo a dual weapon rogue on Nightmare wearing nothing but your bunny slippers of evasion (+6 defense, +20 cunning)

You want Cunning to be at least 20+ regardless of class. You also want to put points into Coercion. This is a role playing game. The better you are at persuading/intimidating people, the better the game will play for you.
Pause often. If you downloaded it off of Steam, then you're playing on a PC. The pause button is the space bar. Always pause before a fight. Always. Think about what you want to do. This includes your companions. You can preset their tactics for them, but if this is your first time playing a Bioware rpg, then you probably want to cherry pick what each one of them does.
Healing is your friend. You can get healing from either Health Poultices or magic. Both are good to have.
If your party has a rogue, then they will do more damage one of two ways. Either have them shoot arrows or position them behind their target. Rogues get extra goodness for stabbing from behind.
Whoever your biggest baddest, toughest warrior is in your party needs to have the best armour they can wear and you can afford. They then need to do everything they can to annoy the bad guys. Taunt, Stoneroar, etc are the ticket for them. Don't worry too much about damage. What you want is for all the enemy to concentrate their attacks on your main fighter (generally known as a tank). Keep your main healed up (either by magic or poultices). This frees everyone else to do the damage.
Enjoy!

Pause often, micromanage your party, use your head.
Side note, I do enjoy the similarity to WoW. With my Rogue character I especially feel the similarity. I find myself telling my party to hold and just going off on my own with my bow and pulling mobs.

how do i train the woman from the swamp to be a healer?
Take the Heal spell, and then when she hits level 14, take the Spirit Healer Specialization, which can be bought from a Merchant if l recall correctly.
But Heal spell and making potions can cover most healing needs.

If you have the PC version you can download the respecialization mod to respec her, or wait until she is high enough level to unlock a second specialization. IMO, the vanilla companion builds are rubish.
