OK guys, I know.
There may be more than two dozen threads regarding this, but I'm so in AWE of the game, I just have to start a new thread(Sorry;)).
I played as a sentinel until now and gone the paragon-way.
My impressions refer to this and therefore I may say things that won't be relevant for another class.
If anyone has something to add by his/her impressions: the more the better.
Story and design:
It's BioWare, I don't have to say much about the story.
Just: You guys know how to make an EPIC story.
Seeing the teamwork and all, the impressive depth of the characters and the always so refreshing jokes(one of my favourite is Joker doing the robot while Legion gives intel about the Heretic Station).
The design of the worlds is breath-taking.
You've done a great work that's unmatched until now in story-telling.
The only thing I didn't like was Conrad Verner.
Not his character or appearancel, but that the game insisted I had put a gun in his face...I never had in ME1.
Plus: I imagined the Immigrant-Fleet more crowded by Talis stories.
Gameplay:
Well, I have to say some critics about this.
After all, it's just my personal oppinion:
The tactical shooting is great.
Although I just played on Normal to chill while playing and set priority to enjoy the design of the levels, it kept surprising me and the different missions are awesome.
The sun-emission on the shields while saving Tali was a great idea.
Not to mention the weapons that all have some sense for me(tested it on the collector-ship with reloads).
I
have to admit, I just stared in awe, as the Cain melted down a
Geth-Centurion with one shot and colored the surroundings in orange.
Only stupid thing on tactical shooting was: My squad-mates found it a great idea to leave their asigned cover, run to Pretorians and the "gun-arm-husks" and shoot at them up close-range when I moved three feet to the side.
The RPG-Part suffered a bit in the gameplay-part.
While the idea of the "curveable" biotics and techs are great, the way they work...not that great.
I tried to curve them on enemies, often it worked great, but some times they switched from curving to direct homing and hit a box in front of me, I originally had curved arround.
That's pretty annoying if it is an explosive box.
Although I like the tactical shooting, I missed a bit more RPG-elements and sometimes the skills felt more like another weapon(that has a great effect) than special skills.
RPG vs Tactic-Shooter:
To conclude a long text: The gameplay was great, but the RPG-elements felt less RPG and more like some costuming for the tactic-shooter.
Edit your armor, edit your apearance and then go on shooting.
The many upgrades for the weapons feel like a great thing for a tactical shooter, but it lacks if you know the origin of Mass Effect was an RPG.
The shooter-elements are great if you look by the perspective of an RPG.
It's half and half creating something that's none of both and then something that just makes fun.
The new Skill-Leveling-System is not as good as the one in the previous game.
Although the specialisation on the different skills in more strength/area/time and hp/damages on the class-skills pretty much do what an RPG can do, I'd prefered something more special(BioWare often enough proved that they are the Studio for making special things).
For example the singularity could have morphed into some kind of reflective Barrier that shoot's projectiles back like the gravity-field of a planet in a "catapult-manuver".
The new "1-2-3-4"-System t keeps me somehow from making the Sentinel/Char I'd like.
If I skill the way I'd like to play, there are points left over or one point is missing to max something.
I'd prefer less points, same number of skills but a straight "1-point-per-skill-level"-System, so I can spend what I got the way I like it without having the feeling of missing points on skills, although I have still points left.
Last thing is the number of weapons and armor-parts.
I think they will be improved by new DLC(Dr.Pepper for example), but for playing the game first time, it's a joke for an RPG.
The only group of weapons that have a great variety are the Heavy weapons...but they are well balanced to have less ammo.
The armor-design is a dream, but the lacking of more parts isn't.
Also important: The new mining-system is lacking the fun of the other mini-games...it's just boring after the second planet.
Conclusion:
BioWare, keep up the great work on story, world-design and characters, but although you showed you can create jewelry of gameplay, it lacks the decent polish to give the diamond the glow that would be needed to honor your great story-telling;).
P.S.: End of wall of text:P
