This is the thing; we gave them all this feedback, yet what would seem to be one of the most straightforward requests has been ignored.Hulluliini wrote...
Just the other day I wondered, why didn't they correct all those things in ME1 that people complained about so much - namely not being able to skip the cutscenes in the beginning, not being able to see the face from all sides, etc etc! It's obviously a big deal for many ppl to create the face that they want.
Hahaha, I didn't know if anyone would get the reference :-p. Kind of fitting for a game with lots of space marines!hangmans tree wrote...

at the very least, can't an online editor be put up on this site in order to generate a code.....
btw...I played through ME2 twice with my soldier shep, but discovered that if I wanted to start a third playthrough as an infiltrator, I couldn't import my ME2 shep!!!! Unfortunately, as it never occurred to me that something so simple would NOT be an option, I didn't record my code for soldier shep. Is there any way to recover the code? Because the small differences are really beginning to grate....

I had hoped that in ME2, upon starting a new game+, you would be able to select a new class but retain your level except with all skill points unassigned, just like when picking up party members in ME1. Is this not the case at all?
Do you have any savegames from your Soldier playthroughs?. If you do, just load one up, go to the Squad screen and in the top left corner will be your identity code.

Following on from my previous thread here: http://social.biowar...03/index/824068, I'm hoping that this can now be the main thread for discussing this issue so that we can get the attention of Bioware in time for any future patches.
Character customization in ME2 still suffers from the same problems that made face creation in ME1 so frustrating and time-consuming, especially for creating female faces due to the added complexity of more rounded face lines. The face creator preview simply does not accurately represent what you will see in-game due to the lighting scheme used and the limited 4-way head control. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if we could bypass the opening intro after having viewed it previously, but we still can't. As evidenced here, players are once again having to start the game from scratch over & over again to just to make a few small tweaks!.
The main issue is players' inability to edit Shepard’s face once we have confirmed it in the face creator. Everything might look fine until you go in-game, get a good 360-degree view at different distances and discover there's just couple of tweaks you'd like to make. Maybe your cheekbones look weird, or don't like how the back of your hair looks, or your lips are too big?. The only option is to start a whole new game just like in ME1 with an unskippable intro (that's now twice as long) yet again!. The posts in this thread clearly demonstrate that the same level of frustration is still being experienced in ME2.
If we could zoom in/out and rotate our character with different light sources in the face creator, we wouldn't need to re-access the face creator because we would be able to see a good, full view of our Shepards!. These functions don't exist though, hence why there IS an issue, one that has plagued the face creator since the release of ME1. Just since buying ME1 late last year, I've already seen this issue brought up numerous times in Mass Effect discussions on this forum and others I visit.
My experence: I imported my femShep from ME1, but because you cannot tweak your existing Shepard’s face, I had to recreate her from scratch. I was sure the face looked just right & near identical, but then got in-game and noticed her cheekbones were bulging out really unnaturally. I didn't want to continue with the face I ended up with (I even finished the tutorial level to be sure), so my option?; restart the game and go through the 12 minute opening (13+ minutes with importing & code entry) again just to make one little change.
We could make much better faces, much more quickly if it was just easier to experiment with & modify our creations in Mass Effect 2. I've come up with a number of solutions to the problem below. Even just implementing one of these would be immensely appreciated:
1. Ask players if they wish to go straight to character creation upon starting a new game, after having viewed the opening sequence at least once previously. It could be implemented via a flag set in the system files independent of savegames.
2. Place an autosave during the loading screen that appears just before the face creator pops up; This way, if we want to make a small adjustment, all we need to do is reload from that autosave and enter our identity code, then go from there. Currently, an autosave is made just as you gain control of Shepard in the tutorial level, plus there is also a "Restart Mission" save, but this is placed after the face creator.
3. Allow players to re-access the face creator within the starting room; This is different to the autosave solution, in that we wouldn't need to re-enter our identity code to make tweaks, but instead just edit Shepard’s current face by going back and forth as many times as needed between the creator and in-game.
4. Allow players to modify Shepard’s face at the end of the tutorial level; An autosave could be made just before a pop-up appears as the players moves into the last room, asking if we would like to make any changes to Shepard before finishing, just like in Fallout 3.
5. Provide a once-off option to tweak Shepards face through the Med-Lab upgrade interface; This would be an excellent addition for existing ME2 players who are deep into the game but unhappy with their faces. Of course, a save would be created beforehand so players can reload if they're still not satisfied with Sheps face.
6. Separate face creator program similar to Dragon Age: Origins, with additional zoom+rotate & lighting options. Players would then record the generated identity code and enter it into the existing ME2 face creator.
7. Allow players to save while in the prologue; I tried to do this in multiple locations, but the option was always greyed out.
I feel I should state that I think Mass Effect 2 is an absolutely fantastic game from what little I've played so far, and that it's not my intention to nitpick. My gripe with the game is solely regarding the face creator, which I believe may just be an honest oversight by the devs.
I agree, maybe they can change that with a patch.

Yea its just another example of the
poorly thought out mess that is ME2. Don't get me wrong, the game is
fun(lots of fun), but its just VERY poorly executed in TOO many places
to make it a game worthy of the reviews its getting.
I also agree

Fallout 3's face creator preview doesn't represent what you see in-game very well at all, but the good thing is that you can create a manual save plus an autosave is made just before you step out of the vault, and there's only a few seconds of loading before you gain control of your character. There's no identity code feature though, so you have to take slider screenshots if you want to "edit" your face, but at least the game doesn't force you to go all the way back through the vault again & again.Permutation wrote...
I like Oblivion's character creator a lot more. Like working with clay.
I prefer the simplicity of ME's actual sliders though, as I find the number of sliders in Oblivion/Fallout overwhelming and almost unnecessary in places.

The lip colour I had was quite subtle in ME1 but seems far brighter in ME2 and therefore was out of place. I would have also liked to have experimented with a couple of new hair styles.
Instead I had the choice of exactly as she was or creating a new Shepard. Try as I might I could not recreate her look with the new sliders.
I also confess, perhaps sadly, that I missed the scar on her right cheek. I had it in my mind that my Shepard would want to keep that scar because it was a reminder of what she did on Elysium.

Also, body types. If Namco can do it, Bioware sure as heck can.

What I think would COMPLETELY work within the context of the game (i.e. make sense in the storyline) would be something simple like a plastic surgeon on the Citadel or something. Seriously, not even a barber exists in the future. Since most people only want to tweak one or two things with their character, (I want to make my mouth not stick out so much) it isn't unreasonable. Plus, it could cost more money with the more you change, so you can't make them look TOO different, so it doesn't screw up the narrative or anything because Shepard will only look slightly different.
That would be great... Starting a new game just because of minor tweaks is very frustrating.

Got me pretty excited for a sec...but the code isn't showing in any of my saved games. The odd thing is, it IS showing in the game I just started. Anyone have an explanation for that? The previous face was created using the ME2 generator--it wasn't a direct import from ME1--so I'm at a total loss as to why one shep would be showing the code, but the other (the one I WANT to see the code for) wouldn't................................

It's a pain as a couple of my friends wanted to have the look of my Shepard without having to play through Mass Effect 1 first.
