Im thinking about trying a solo, or solo + dog run with a pure mage. Is it even possible, how hard is it? Im just about to finish my first playthrough, and the game is extremely easy even on nightmare with no potions allowed (I am using a warrior wearing the black templar armor mod (blood dragon prenerf equivalent) with a full party. I think the armor may be what is making the game so trivial, but it looks so awesome that I cant play without it. I cant beleive that prenerf blood dragon armor was so ridiculously good, or is black templar armor mod even better than blooddragon?
Anyways, back on topic, what do you think of the idea of solo nightmare or solo nightmare + dog with no AW/BM.

Solo + Dog = Duo >_>
i'ts Do'able, just some fights are going to be quite challenging, especially for a Reg Mage. Gonna be all squishy
.
I Assume you will running Shapeshifter and spirit healer. I wouldn't put any points toward shapeshifting IMHO, throw them into AoE/CC spells.

I'm guessing that a non AW/BM mage is going to have to spam potions in order to beat bosses.

I wouldn't put any points in the other specializations, Spirit Healer is kind of pointless for soloing, and Shapeshifter is just plain pointless. There are a ton of good spells you can take (glyphs, hexes, sleep, telekinetic, mana clash, cold, lightning (since you have spell might and blizzard anyway), walking bomb, earth (petrify+VWB+stonefist), mass paralysis (since you aren't taking blood mage and there's no FF on mass paralysis). It shouldn't be too tough, only tough fight would be the wolf fight if you get it early, any other fight you'll get enough space to set up a chain of CC to keep your enemies in check while you pound on them. You'll probably need more lyrium potions than you would as a Blood Mage, still mage is the easiest solo, even without AW or BM.

It depends on the boss, Dragons and Gaxxkang (If you don't one shot him with mana clash), yes. You also get pretty fast mana regen when you're low with 1.02, with some of the bosses you just need to keep them hexed and between first tier spells and staff attacks they die really fast. The tier 7 staves with staff focus do pretty good damage too, as good as an archer (against a hexed target the damage is around sword and shield level).

As has been said, mages have tons of options, even without specs.
Also, whatever you do, do the full solo, not with dog or anything. It'll feel 1000x better, and people don't care if you do a duo.

Animate Dead instead of the dog for example. It is not all that powerful spell, but it has creative uses and solo character, even a mage, can get repetitive after some time. Since summoned skeletons have abilities derived from killed humanoids one can get archer, warrior or mage as needed, even a skeleton to pick some locks, and can also be buffed with Glyph of Warding for example, or specializing as Spirit Healer with Lifeward could help with survivability. Death Syphon in the same line helps with mana, and Walking Bombs also provide opportunities for fun use.

^ No no no no no no no!
Using Ranger pets or Animate dead completely cheapifys (yes, I'm so cool I made up a word!) the entire playthrough. Not point doing a challenge like that.
The dude that did a Ranger solo. Sure, you're good. But the point of an archer or a caster mage solo is that you have no tank, you have to kite and use other strategies to win.

Not very difficult.
Blood mage taken, but his talents weren't taken.

Mages are an easy solo, you'll be fine.

How does one kite effectively? Every time I move away from an attack it still seems to strike.

Very easily use talents that keep enemies at a distance: dirty fighting/scattershot/pinning shot etc use crippling to weaken aggros, archers are lethal and too underated imo.

If you have Miasma for example, just keep them inside the area, they'll never catch you. If they do catch and start an attack, you can't force it to miss by getting out of range, but if they never get to start an attac animation, you're golden. Also, use terrain to your advantage, things like tables can work wonders.
