Jewish. No, not being racist. It's just that the Quarians have so many Hebrew references. The star system named Sheol and the planet named Gei-Hinnom, in a Quarian system, and the fact that the Quarians opened their conclave with a traditional Jewish festival blessing (but in english) that was spoken by one of the female admirality members. It went like, "Blessed be the ancestors who have kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season." This is basically the exact translation of the traditional Jewish blessing, called the "shehecheyanu." Just replace "Ancestors" with "God." It's chanted at every major Jewish festival.

Maybe I'm reaching, but I think there are too many references. Perhasp the Quarians are modeled after Jewish people? I mean, exile from homeland/planet and all...

I thought it was pretty clear, too, the references to the Quarians I mean. But it doesn't have to mean that one of the writers is Jewish (even if one is).

I'm afraid of the possible replies to this topic, though.

Yeah. I think I opened a can of worms... but I thought it was interesting lol. They should have hired Israeli VA's for the Quarians, would have been cool.

A real-world sociopolitical reference in a work of science fiction? That's just crazy talk.

I don't see what is so wrong that they take real wold reference and integrate it into the game. That just makes it feel more real imo

I never said anything was wrong. Did I put something up for debate or something?

Well, yes why not anyway?

The various races and their cultures had to be thought out by the developers, we are humans and we have to take references and be inspired by our reality to create video games, especially with something as complex as the ME's universe in which things still need to hold "some" logic to them even if it's science-fiction. It's like the Krogan's warring bands and the way they exchange females because they are fertile, that was basically how humanity was at the time when we started to control fire in our caves and hunting with our spears, just that there wasn't any Genophage to cause that behavior. There are inspirations from many real cultures in the species of the Mass Effect universe as much as there are such things as well in Star Wars, Star Trek, Star Gate, you name them...

Well, the analogue of Jews being a wandering ethnic minority who are generally the victims of bigotry searching for a "home" is kinda funny, especially once you consider the quarians home planet was a...desert planet...

I fear this thread is particularly susceptible to Godwin's Law. I pray that the conversation remains civil.

I hadn't really though of them like that though. I feel sort of bad I suggest they give up on their homeland, now .

Pshh. Next, you'll tell me that Batarians are based on Islamic extremists, just because they use terror tactics, feel alienated by global leaders, live out in a lawless area, and are stereotyped as criminals by a greater majority of people... Oh, wait.

Well, it could well be influences are taken from the Jew, many books and things are often imitating already existing religions and races.

Legion said the quarian homeworld was more arid than Earth. I don't think that means desert.

Jews and Arabs are very similar (and historically, the same people). They share customs, traditions, religions and language / word roots (Western Semitic). I saw a bit of both in them. Also Russian via the accents of course.

I agree that the Quarians seem quite the analogue for Hebrews, but I don't think that means one of the writers is necessarily Jewish.

For example, if you search through the systems in ME2 you'll find a whole lot of references to all sorts of things--my personal favorite was the planet Watson and its moon Franklin. I just think that the staff took inspiration from just about everywhere for the game.

I honestly wonder if/how long it will take for this thread to degenerate.

I'm speculating that one of the writers must be Jewish because the Quarian Hebrew references weren't just general knowledge. Like, you didn't have some guy named Kal'Cohen or something. They were more in depth things, such as festival blessings, san hedrin-like trials, and etc. I guess it's not for sure, although.

I wonder how many people are going to hate Tali now.

Maybe I shot the Tali bandwagon in the foot by bringing out their inner fcktard?
