Anyways, seriously, it's sad that your friend chooses to miss one of the most amazing stories in the world of gaming, for such a small reason. I can understand the fact that some people - I know a few - simply don't like sci-fi or fantasy related stories. I don't get it, but I can understand it. Now, to narrow one's appreciation of something because it doesn't have a "modern setting" is simply wrong. There's so much to learn from the past History, and so much wonderful speculation to contemplate for the future.
But, in the end, I suppose we all have our reasons to like something. When it comes to games I have to say I don't fancy any particular genre. What I like the most are the stories being told and the characters being portrayed. So I can enjoy and admire the quality of games such as Halo and Modern Warfare, but I always find them lacking for the fact that we don't know anything about these characters we are playing. They are mere abstractions, vehicles for your experience of action, and nothing more. Even Half Life's Gordon Freeman is an abstract character, a man without a past. I liked the recent Assassin's Creed 2, the character Ezio was enjoyable, but lacked depth. And the storyline is sealed shut. You are a passive performer when it comes to the plot.
The Mass Effect series to me really breaks the mold when it comes to storytelling in videogames. It has the richest characters I have ever seen, characters you care about. And it's an emotional ride in a fantastically detailed universe, that you play no only as part of but in actually changing the flow of history. Even with some imperfections, there is so much to love in Mass Effect, I just can't get enough of it.

Then again I won't play GTA4 (unless it's made really cheap) and that's supposed to be an excellent game.

A modern day RPG wouldn't work imo, i told him that seeing its almost the same as stepping out of your door, chatting with friends about their problems or talk "kok" sing song.
I'm all for a modern day RPG as long as it isn't about mundane life (and why should it, other RPG's don't). You could start the story as an average guy in an average town and by the end of the game a demon has burst out of the ground and is threatening the world.

I've experienced something similar with Battlestar Galactica. Now, I know that some great scifi shows like Babylon 5 and Serenity are tough to recommend to non-sci-fi people, but Battlestar Galactica was one of the great survivor struggle stories and human drama's first and foremost, unseen before in television sci-fi format.
But, no luck. Setting can be a huge obstacle for immersive experience to very many people.
A great example and something I've had very similar trouble with.
I'm not going to testify BSG's greatness but of the many people I've tried to get to watch it, the FEW who have thought it was excellent. In my opinion I think it does every right in an on going drama; characters, action, visuals, politics and plot. The fact that it's sci-fi though, although it's whole setting, really does not matter in the grander scheme of things. Yet to most people they avoid it like a nerdy plague.

I think it's the fact that people automatically assume that you have to be 'Nerdy' to watch Sci-fi. A programme like BSG although Sci-fi is more of a drama than anything else, I also think that the attitude carries over to games as the OP has said about their friend.

Heh, won't play it because of the timeline... Well, I hope he enjoys that short (less than 10 hours for me) single-player campaign in CoD:MW2 then. *derisive snort* I picked that up from the elcor!
Absurd.
So true. I dunno, do you think his friend might enjoy L4D2? Technically, it's set in "modern times" but perhaps said friend objects to zombies aka "the Infected."

Of the timeline.... And i go "wtf"? Apparantly he doesn't want to play one of the most epic games ever simply because the game isn't set in modern times.
So i told him off whats the point of playing games in modern time setting when you can friggin step out your door!!
He only seems to be interested in games like GTA it seems where it is all set in an american city.
Everyone has their likes and dislikes. If he doesn't want to play, oh well. He's missing out.

For some time since GTA 3, i don't know what he plays but the GTA franchise seems to entertain him alot.Caion wrote...
That's ... odd. This is the first time I heard of someone like that. How long has he been gaming? Did he get into it recently, because games have only just recently become less fantastical as a whole. Nowadays instead of an anthropomorphized possum with a rocket pack and a sword, we just have space marines in powered armor.
He might as well give me his ps3.

Guess why he didn't play L4D2? Because the setting is all "rubble and post apocalyptic". Sheesh.AtreiyaN7 wrote...

Why is this guy your friend? Surely
ignorance this great must extend into other areas of life.
aren't besties or very close, just a friend i hang out with when theres
nothing else to do or when i need to work on a design project.
And
yeah that kind of ignorance DOES greatly extend into other areas of
life, especially his hatred against arabs and muslims just because of a
few extremists and others but im not going to bash him on the internet,
he is still my friend and his ignorance is something i will have to
tolerate unless it gets out of hand.

Modern warfare 2 was fun for a while in multiplayer and then it gets incredibly boring and pointless with nothing but "pew pew pew" and the single player is turd, its exactly the same as all the previous call of doody's.

Guys! Stop farming! Its time for some Kung-Fu Action!
Oh, and btw: There IS killing in "Encumbered Rain", i mean, the main-plot is a KILLER!!! lol
Freeplay??? Ahem, that game IS FREEPLAY! Its not Sandbox-freeplay , but Decision-Freeplay.
Action? Well can someone explain to me, how your 4 Main-Characters can die, when there is no "Action" in the game??
Let me guess: He plays GTA4, Prototype and Infamous only? :innocent:
