I've seen several people state by now, that the devs seem to like Liara.

Where are you getting this impression?

I remember seeing some dev comment that Jack was his or her favorite, and someone else I recall liking Grunt the best, but Liara?

Why would Bioware wreck her like they did, and give her such a nothing role if they liked her specifically, above the average squaddie? More likely to me, they are in the process of sweeping the ME1 LIs under the rug, or at least moving them away from the important squaddie roles. Oh, I don't doubt we'll see them in ME3. Hell, we may end up getting a "Liara" DLC too. But I'm willing to bet her new role as a "Barla Von" and aspiring Shadow Broker replacment to be is here to stay.

They gave her her entire own comic series.  I think they like her. I just wish they'd shown that liking in the game more, and not the comic book.

Personally, if we do get a chance to rescue him, I want to buy the gent a pint. My Shep will be very grateful for him saving the life of himself and his girlfriend. We'll all have a good old laugh in the bar on Illium afterwards, with Liara on Shepard's arm and a drunk Feron making awkward passes at the asari bartender.

If that happens I might consider to forgive BW.

One thing I'll say is that Liara always struck me as having a very cold side. Listen to what she says after combat in ME1 and the tone. She could always be a very very icy killer.

It's one of the things I liked about her. Made me laugh, in fact, because of the contrast. All flustered when she's trying to talk to Shepard, cold killer on the battlefield.

Agreed.  Everytime I saved Kaiden on Virmire was so I could see Liara shoot Saren in the head on the Citadel. ^^;

Also her "some scientists can be very dangerous" quote ^^

I think Bioware was shooting for a vaguely unsatisfied feeling with ME2 for those of us who played ME1

I'm not saying you are wrong, in fact I agree with your assumption, but that is about the dumbest thing ever.  Why intentionally shoot for upsetting the current fanbase?  It does nothing to draw me into the game or make me more emotionally engaged.  In fact the only thing my disappointment with ME2 has done is make me delay getting the lastest DLC for DA:O and put pre-ordering the expansion for it on hold until I know for certain their plans for one of my favorite video game characters.  I thought DA:O was a great game but I will not show support for BW until I know damn well and sure that they are going to fix this situation.

I may be just one fan in a big ocean, but believe me, money will talk louder to BW than any number of posts I could ever make here on the forum.  If BW's intent with ME2 was to loose a fan, they are pretty damn close to it atm.

I don't think they were aiming for upsetting just unsatisfied. I think there is a bit of a difference between those two emotions but it will play differently for different people. While it left me unsatisfied it isn't bad in my book because it left me wanting more of anything ME but most especially more Liara. I won't be satisfied until I get to finish Shepard's story and get Liara back by my Shep's side. In most cases it will work in Bioware's favor because people will be wanting more, especially wanting to know more about the characters. This thread is an indication of how good a job they did. They were always going to risk alienating fans no matter what decision they made because you can never please all the fans but as long as I get more of Liara via DLC, the comic and ME3 I'll be happy.

Whoa, I didn't know that Liara shot Saren instead of Kaidan.  I'll have to make sure I bring him along with Liara next time.

It's not surprising that Liara is like ice on the battlefield.  I'm assuming she would have received combat and biotics training from her mother during her youth and adolescence.   It is an interesting contrast:  confident and cold on the battlefield, awkward and warm off of it.

That's exactly why I found Liara in ME2 believable. I still believe she's lost and broken inside and that's she's putting on a facade but it doesn't surprise me that she'd use that as a shield to hide behind. I'm sure she used the same attitude with any nefarious character she ran across during her travels from dig to dig. She can take care of herself (in fact she tells Shepard that very thing) if need be. I just hope we get an opportunity to see more of the flustered and shy Liara in ME3.

You may ease your worries if you think that Liara and Ashley/Kaidan have been set aside somehow. While their appearance in ME2 is seemingly irrelevant, I think BioWare plans to have them resurface in ME3 with much bigger roles and more squad participation. The mere fact that we can't get them involved in the Suicide Mission, let alone killed therein, speaks volumes.

I just don't have the time or patience to go copy out everything speedy111280 has said in the last four pages of this thread and tack on "I agree".  But I do.  For the record, in case anyone is keeping track.

I also want to say that I completely buy into the idea that Liara was able to become a very good, very successful information broker in just two years.  This is the woman who was able to, from freakin' archaeological dig sites, piece together the theory that the Prothean Extinction was caused by some outside agent that purposefully tried to wipe away any trace of its involvement, and that this had happened many times in the past and that the Protheans weren't the first.  She ROCKS at taking seemingly unrelated pieces of information and finding the hidden connections.  That skillset would absolutely translate to information brokering.

More than the adorable awkwardness, this is why I love this character.  I'm a sucker for smart women.
And, yes, the "darkening" of the character is jarring and different - but I don't think it's "out-of-nowhere".  Liara is freakin' TERRIFYING on the battlefield in ME1.  Gosh, I miss her.

Yup. Liara herself said that there is little difference between her work researching through dig sites and digging up the whereabouts of criminals, except that the latter still smell.

Also, and I'm late in bringing this up, but what the hell happened to Liara's head fringes? o_O Not to mention the sides of her face. Do they explain this change in the comics?

Especially Liara.  She is The Most Significant Character in the ME Universe other than Shep.  In ME1, Shep does not find Ilos without Liara.  Everyone else is extra firepower.  In the ME1/ME2 transition, Shep's body ends up with the Collectors without Liara.  Everyone else on Shep's squad gave up on Shep.

This is why I have high hopes for a Liara DLC being a lot of content, even if its not a lot of Romance Content.  Really, romance acknowledgement is enough to make me happy, and as for the rest - I'd just like this very important character to get to do something other than sit behind a desk and plot bloody terrible vengeance.  Because, really, there's just so much more she could be doing, because she is completely and totally awesome.

Not just that but her skin is a different tone and eyes seem to be grey (in ME she had blue eyes). Maybe the stress and guilt she's feeling is affecting her pigmentation (or I could be looking too closely).

True.  We need Joker's inability to follow an "Abandon Ship" order so Shep can die in the first place. Image IPB

Not that I begrudge him his oddly moving love-affair with Normandy1.  He's still one of my favorites.  Even though he did totally get Shep killed.

I can say I do agree that Liara has and always had the ability to be an
information broker. I guess it is just a couple of things that aren't explained that make it seem strange to me for now.
Those problems would probably be fixed in the next two comics.
I have no particular problem with her change (I would have thought that it was even more interesting if you could actually talk to her about more than killing the SB's agents. (Something along the lines of you love her might be a thought for BioWare to consider, lol). But it definitely is strange that she seemed to go through a
lot to get Shepard back, but when Shepard actually does come back she doesn't really seem to care (especially since Shepard was, according to her, her first and only love).
I would have thought that she would at least E-mail you like Anderson (how the hell Anderson found out immediately is completely beyond me) did at the beginning of the game to come see her as she was one of the few who knew that Cerberus was rebuilding you.
Mostly my problems are caused by inconsistent storytelling brought on by the comic series and upcoming Liara DLC.
I probably shouldn't worry to much about BioWare screwing up the Liara DLC as they would be putting it out to those who were already faithful to the ME universe, so they would have no real reason to hold back on anything (including the romantic content:wub:).

Interesting observation.  Her eyes still look blue to me, but she's definitely a heck of a lot paler than she was in ME1.

At first I chalked it off to bad lighting in her office (seriously, the poor girl's going to give herself eyestrain working in there ) or going pale r/t lack of sunlight exposure (she apparently never leaves said office, to say nothing of Illium's rather anemic sun). On the other hand, I also noticed that pretty much every other pureblood asari you meet looks the same way (Samara, Mordin, et al).  Deliberate stylistic decision on the part of the devs, perhaps?

I totally agree, any changes could be due to the devs simply making an artistic choice (although I much prefer the bluer Liara if this is the case). Still there is the case of Shiala who as turned green because of the after affects of the thorian, so it's not beyond the realms of possibilty that there could be a story reason for it (again, probably over-analysing).

Yeah all you have to do is report threads, but only if it has negative, hateful and disrespectful content in it. That thread clearly had all three.

But sorry to derail this precious thread, I just wanted to get rid of the hate in that thread. Plus I was called more names in that thread than I have ever been. It was wild to say the least.
