It makes them much better characters in the long run and makes the romance more meaningful.
So you're happy that Liara served no part in 1/3 of the trilogy and feel that having no second chapter of the romance made it more meaningful. Good for you. The rest of us are disappointed that the game took one of our favorite characters and strongest emotional ties to the game and threw it out the window. I'm more than happy to agree to disagree.
I rather find it interesting, actually. Kaidan/Ashley are angry at you but send you a message explaining themselves later on. Liara is honest with her intentions. She reveals even more if you do her tasks. I am glad she does not go all mooshy and jumps your bones into melding mode... that would have made me angry. The fact she is stronger now and does something she believes in to avenge both you and a friend is a nice twist to her character.
The more comics of the Revelation series will come out, the more fleshed out her reasoning will be. And I bet the new novel in april? will also reveal more insight into things we do not yet understand.
Liara in ME2 is good imo... she just needs more content after Redemption is done (ie.... Special mission with her to help her friend or attack the SB) I am not 100% satisfied with her in ME2 - then again 100% satisfaction is blisss unattainable unless you are a TALI FAN (sorry, had to do it) - but I am pretty happy with what they did... Of course I would lie if I said I did not want more from the character in DLC/ME3.
