How, mechanically, do you get Dog to fetch stuff? Ever since the HN origin on this my first goround with the game, when I try to talk to Rex he just barks happily. in the Cousland household I used to get cutscenes where I could ask him to see what he could find, or something of that sort.

There are times in the game that you can't do it. Basically Dog will do those cutscenes until after you go to sleep for the night. Then he won't be able to do it again until you're finished at the Castle. Some characters will be that way in the game too, that is that in certain parts of the game you only get them saying something without it going to a cutscene.
