I meet all the specifications and have had Mass Effect 1 installed before, upgraded to windows 7 and just recently tried to reinstall the games. Other games work fine, i am currently just having issues with mass effect. the error that i get is
"There is an issue with the following XML:
<xmlbutton name="mute" action="system" value="mute">
<position x="654 y="7"/>
<size width="23" height= "27"/>
<bitmap normal= ".\\data\\autorun\\mute_n.bmp"
duplicate="true" over=".\\data\\autorun\\mute_.h.bmp"
normalmute=".\\data\\autorun\\muted_n.bmp" duplicatemute= "true"
overmute=".\\data\\autorun\\muted_h.bmp"/>
</xmlbutton>
And several like errors that follow this one. Its not even letting me install the game. Any help would be great.

Do you have 2 dvd drives, with DA:O or another game disc in the second drive? If so, eject that disk.
Same can be said if you have a single drive, and you are installing from Steam, EA download, or other digital download.

Try downloading the latest version of xml from MS website:
http://msdn.microsof...s/data/ff683553
Are you installing from disk, or digital download?
If disk, you can try copying the contents of the disk to a folder on your hard drive, and attempting the installation from there. It should bypass the autorun.xml file which is what I think is causing your grief.
Make sure you run as admin, and also try XP compatibility mode.

Strange... after installing XML it still didn't work on that drive (different error though), but then I tried my other DVD drive and was able to install the game...
So in the end it worked somehow, though I still don't know what the exact problem was... xD anyway, thanks for the help!

Sounds to me like your drive could be on the way out TheTrooper1148. Some anti-pirate software is notorious for loading crap drivers onto a system... might not be your issue but what you have said fits this scenario but the good news is that drives usually die slowly over the course of several months i.e. you have time to save your penny's up (assuming this is the case).
