I have a problem with that one:

I pull the trigger and it does nothing, except some smoke appears at the muzzle.

After researching it I wanted to try it in my next mission, but it did - as mentioned above - nothing. There was a number over it, something like "54%".
I thought it might need more ammo and didn't use it until the IFF-mission. Again it did nothing, but the number over it changed to "64%".

All other grenade launchers I researched worked as intended, so I can't imagine that the "Cain" as latest and thus, "best" launcher is so complicated to operate.

What did I do wrong respectively miss?

Hold to charge it up before letting it fire.

you need 100%. to fire it once.

hence why I never use it.

it's not a weapon you use lightly. it's quite hard to save up ammo for it, save it for those rare "everything in this room MUST die" situations

I shot it once and it was a great show, but then i couldn't use it. I really didn't see the appeal for the weapon that much. I was a fan of the other big weapons. The Cain was my least favorite.

yeah, it's great fun to use. then you die horribly if it fails to kill everything.

I liked it. I used it on the last mission on the final platform before you fight the scions and husks. I didn't want to waste my ammo shooting them, so I just shot the Cain at the platform. Killed them all instantly.

Once charge is at 100%, and depending on the difficulty level, it will instakill everything in sight. I think only Insanity lvl Preatorians can take a shot and live.

Or if you accidentally shoot your cover, teammate, or a charging husk...  too close to impact = deadshep.

If you don't land a direct hit Ymir heavy mechs can survive as well.

only useful for one shot basically unless some power cell ammo is lying around. Even with 1 power cell crate around you need to have a full upgraded heavy weapon ammo storage to be able to fire another shot

Full heavy weapon ammo lets you shoot twice. It's a worthless gun.

Its a great weapon, but very costly to use. Still, it can end fights very quickly. My favorite spots to use it:

1. Colossus on Haelstrom: Immediately after talking to Kal'Reeger I fire this bad boy at the Colossus, I don't even move from my spot. I duck immediately and everything dies. Sometimes there are one or two geth troopers who survive because they were on the correct side of obstacles while advancing on me. Still, mopping them up is easy. It turned a fight that would take me 5-10 minutes down to less than a minute.

2. Final mission Boss: Even if you don't have enough for two hits, one is enough to take his armor down considerably. Once again the length of the fight is severely reduced.

I know some people who use it against those missions on Ilium when you have large numbers of black eclipse engineers making gratuitous use of cover.

I'm not that far in on my insanity run but I'd guess that one cain shot will not be enough to kill it.

So, what exactly do you do to "charge it up"? Duck and cover until it has 100%? If so, how long would it take?

Why does it come up with "64%" and not with "0%" and then charging up to 100%?

Sometimes I just can't see the obvious.

The Cain measures ammo in % points unlike the other heavy weapons, each ammo crate give around 20% of a charge (hence the importance of saving the cain for the right target). If you have 100% (or greater) you can fire the Cain. Hold down the trigger and the gun will warm up.

QFT

Hmm... 19 rockets and grenades that's useful on just about anything, or one to two shots of something that's just dead weight on your back after one scion encounter?

It's an extremely powerful weapon in the right situations. After using the heat-seeking auto missile launcher...I must admit, I actually like the Cain better.

1 shot from Cain = 100%

So to fire the Cain once, you need to have 100%.

You get percentage increases by collecting ammo for the heavy weapon.

Careful with this gun...Ive literally killed myself with it by shooting it inside a small room. (Specifically, the control room at the end of tali's loyalty quest)
