I tried going paragon and save the slaves, but the dude got away and I didn't get Zaeed's loyalty. I tried again letting the slaves die and finally got his loyalty. Is renegade the only way here?

I got his loyalty being paragon. Can't tell you exactly what I did to get his loyalty, but I remember punching him at least once.

Redo the quest when your paragon points are high enough.

You have to be smooth enough to talk your way out. You did force him into failing his mission.

Strange. At the point where you argue you can either kill Zaeed or save the slaves, I chose to save the slaves. Shepard says something along the lines of 'screw loyalty' but even though the guy gets away, I still got his loyalty.

I think the problem might be not having enough paragon points. The loyalty quest was available really early in the game. My first loyalty quest in fact. Thanks for the confirmation, at least now I know a paragon solution is possible.

the para check has u pointing a gun at him and telling him to stop being an ass, being selfish and work as a team ( or something along those lines )

I saved the slaves, let his target get away, punched him, told him that he brought his misery on himself, and gained his loyalty. As long has you seen blue dialog, you should be good.

Ah right, there are different upgrades depending on whether you save the slaves or not. I can't remember exactly, but I think you get a heavy weapon ammo if you save the slaves, and an assault rifle damage upgrade if you didn't. Ended up with 6/6 assault rifle damage upgrades on that save.
