Are the over bloated cut-scenes and dialogue killing ME?

 So I have just finished the game. I will admit that it was a good game but not great. The main problem I have with this game is that there is more cut-scenes and dialogue than there is combat. In fact it feels like the VIDEO GAME is the exact opposite of most games I play, in so far as the dialogue outweights the action 3:1. Usually, for a VIDEO GAME, the action outweights the dialogue 3:1. Take DA:O as a good example of a good ratio for a VIDEO GAME.

When I first heard that the game would have 2 disc for the Xbox I was genuinely excited. Here I was thinking that that would mean oddles and oddles of combat. I mistakenly assumed this because I thought I was buying a VIDEO GAME. However, to my disappointment what I got was little more than a SOAP OPERA in space.

To say that the developers focused on the ROMANCE instead of the COMBAT in this game is a gross understatement. That is all this game, and I use the word GAME very loosely, is. To think of the potential that ME universe has as a VIDEO GAME the mind boggles as to why it is wasted on ROMANCE! Surely those who want this much ROMANCE in a game can find other games more suitable, like SIMS 3 for example.

For me, ROMANCE is killing ME. ME 2 is just plain boring when it comes to playing a VIDEO GAME. I might as well watch a movie because a VIDEO GAME ME 2 is not!  It is instead a SOAP OPERA and BSG is a much better experience than ME will ever be if you want a SOAP OPERA in space.

So, to the devs. Please ignore all the nerd-rage and give us back a VIDEO GAME for ME 3 not a SOAP OPERA. Some of us do have a life and don't need to live vicariously through a VIDEO GAME playing house. I, foe one, would much prefer the developers concentrated on COMBAT instead of pandering to the demands of the noisy minority who, for some strange reason, think its fun to play a game that is little more than a SOAP OPERA!

I'm not sure how romance is the main focus of ME2 when you can finish the game without having any romantic relationships at all. A Japanese Galge is a game focused on romance. Mass Effect 2 isn't.

And i honestly got to shoot people more of the time than i was actively romancing people...i think your playing the game wrong bro :P

Personally, I think the romance options are marvelous additions to the game. Really deepens the npcs and the protagonist as well.



Also I too spent way more time shooting stuff than romancing people. Remember that most of the dialogue is completely optional and you do NOT have to rummage through it to complete the game and enjoy the main plotline completely.

Not at all. If you want I will be happy to provide the statistics that show that the cut-scenes and dialogues are longer than the combat component of this game. The bulk of the dialogue with each character is geared towards romance, depending of the sex of the PC.



The fact that DA:O, a real RPG, has more combat than cut-scenes and dialogue points towards romance being the main problem with ME.

So you mean every character you talk to, from the mercs in Omega, to the shopkeepers in the Citadel, or the police officers in Illium, or the Krogans in Tuchanka, are all dialogues with romance?

You only get romantic dialogues from seven of your crew, and they're all skippable dialogue that you can ignore if you don't want to, since you don't need to have a romantic relationship to finish the game. Also, romance can only be enacted while in the Normandy, and most of the time you'll be spending your time outside the ship.

So unless you actually have been playing the game just for the romance, I fail to see how romance has a much bigger slice of Mass Effect 2 than the combat.I would believe that romance it a big part of Mass Effect 2 if the main plot actually called for the romance to be important, like using the power of love to take out the last boss with a Love Love Attack in the form of a barenaked Zeus. However, romance is OPTIONAL in this game, something you partake in only if you actually want to.

It's one of the most popular features of ME -not only that, but romances are also a trademark for Bioware games. Every game since BG2 has had multiple ones.

If anything BW should expand on it for ME3.

Lets be nice now, as far as i can tell he doesn't play many sports games, most of what he plays are RPGs, so he should have a good opinion on the state of RPGs.



But as stated before, you dont HAVE to romance anyone if you dont want to, now if this played out like a dating sim where you have to pick a girlfriend to win (hur hur) i could understand the hate, but as it stands, the com,bat system is (arguably) improved, there was requests for deeper intraction with your squad mates, and yes that includes romance for specific genders (not fairly in some cases)



though notably, there could have been MORE romance if the GMs wanted it to be, they left out Grunt (thankfully) and the asari this time, and your previous LIs from ME1 played very little roles in ME2, so, if you only talk to people enough to tget their loyalty missions, then do what you have to do, the romance cut scenes dont really compare to combat time, do they?

I find your use of CAPS LOCK most intriguing. It really makes things STAND OUT in the rest of your text as though you are RAISNG YOUR VOICE to get your POINT ACROSS.

Though in my opinion you're a bit off the chart here. If you want to play a shooter that is truly a shooter, go buy Gears of War 1/2, any of the Halo games, Army of Two's or.. well, you get the picture. You got yourself an RPG with Mass Effect 2; a cinematic one at that (though that's my opinion) and there's bound to be more talk, which don't mean there aint any walk.

DO:A so much less dialogue / combat ratio in comparison to ME2?

ME2 isn't DO:A and ME2 isn't ME1 or Gears of War.

It smells different, it tastes different and I like it. Other folk don't have to Image IPB Is called different tastes.

It's an RPG, despite what people say. Having more dialogue/cutscenes than combat is perfectly acceptable.

Besides, if there's anything lacking about the romance aspect of ME2 it's that it's lacking in the writing department: While not lacking in the witty dialogue, most of the romances can be summed up to Shepard the Pimp seducing everyone with sexual healing (except for the awesome Tali romance route, which is so heartwarming).



Romance still hardly occupies more than a fraction of the game though.

If you want less Dialogue and more Action - play GOW. ME 2 is an RPG and more dialogue than action is perfectly fine with me. In my opinoin, there should've been more dialogue in ME2 than there already is.

And as far as romances go...they're an OPTION, you DON'T have to persue them.

Take past BW games as an example. I use these as examples because I have not played a FPS in over a decade. BG, KoTOR, JE, NWN and even DA:O, the core feature of all these games is combat. In ME combat is far from the core feature, in reality, it takes up less than one fifth of the game. 

All of the games mention are what I define as RPG, ME 2 does not even come close to being a RPG of the same standard as previous BW RPG game. All the previous games have a decent story, but none of them is as bloated with cut-scenes and dialogue as ME is. ME is little more than a SOAP OPERA in space. And, this is a shame considering that the above mentioned VIDEO GAMES are great to play not only once, but again and again.

There is no real replayability for ME 2. Once you have played through you know the outome. There is little room in variation for builds etc because the game is so bloated with romance. The potential of the ME universe in terms of combat can not be underrated, yet BW has decided to cater to the lowest common denominator and removed any real potential for this IP to be an excellent VIDEO GAME. Instead we are subjected to constant cut-scenes and dialogue.

This is an RPG...I think you bought the wrong game if you want combatcombatcombatcombatcombatcombatcombat.

See, this is the problem with straddling two genres. One one hand, you get folks like the OP who scream "too much talk, not enough kill!" and on the other hand, you get people like me who're whining about the loss of things like the inventory system and the joys of finding 42 different pieces of armour with a 1% difference in stats.

I'm not sure what you mean, because previous BW games are very story driven and character focused.  
Luckily for me, those are the two things I care about in an RPG.  Not stat building or combat.
And I haven't heard the lowest common denominator being those who like a ton of dialogue, especially in an RPG.

I thought the combat was really satisfying in ME 2 but what really keeps me coming back is the story and the awesome characters and writing. Its just that kind of game, whether you like it or not.

Romance is an incredibly small portion of the dialogue. If your argument is that ME2 has too much dialogue, then saying "romance is killing ME" is just plain misleading.

Also, I'm not exactly sure how you played your games, but KotOR, DA:O, JE, and BG(II) all had roughly the same amount of combat as dialogue, assuming you talked to your party members and did a reasonable amount of the quests. They probably had less cutscenes, but only because the technology of the time wasn't really up to the challenge of game engine rendered cutscenes. Regardless of the percentages, in the end, what I remember fondly about all of those games are the dialogue and the story, not the combat. If you want less story and more action, you're probably better off playing more traditional TPS/FPS's and such. While it's all opinion, I think it's generally accepted that dialogue makes a game more of an RPG, rather than less of one, as you imply.

The problem with your "observation" is that Mass Effect is hardly "bloated" in Romance because romance is not only optional, but takes up such as small place in the gameplay that people might not even know it's there if they haven't been told beforehand. Also, while combat is but a fraction of the overall game experience, it is the largest piece of the game that people play. In fact, I've heard people complain about Mass Effect 1 and 2 being games with "too much action" compared to your traditional RPG.

If you want an example of a game based solely on romance or dialogue, try playing some japanese romance games, or stuff like Dreamfall. Mass Effect (and ME2) hardly falls into the same category as these games. In besides, most of the conversations in ME2 can be skipped/fast-forwarded with the spacebar.

It's a shame really, because you seem to be one of the more articulate and civil posters around here, and yet the points you make are highly disagreeable. Maybe if you can show us concrete evidence of Mass Effect having "too much romance", which from my experience playing both games isn't the case.

The point I am making is that previous BW games have good stories and character focus without being over-bloated with cut-scenes and dialogue. Previous BW games had combat as the main focus, whilst being able to tell a good story. ME 2 has all this reversed. It sacrifices all the good things, in my opinion, that are a core feature of previous BW games ie: combat, inventory, loot, for over bloated cut-scenes and dialogue. I am not saying its bad per say, I'm just saying that ME 2 is too over bloated with that side of the game when compared to previous BW games and this, again in my opinion, is killing ME.

In hindsight, I should have titled this thread differently. Maybe, are the cut-scenes and dialogue killing ME?
