Are the over bloated cut-scenes and dialogue killing ME?

So a very small part of the game...has killed the game...hmmn. Peculiar outlook.

I must disagree.

That is the crux of the problem. They are not a "very small" part of the game. In fact the time spent in cut-scenes and dialogue take up over 4/5 of the game time, not counting mining for minerals.

I really disagree with your opinion, Taiko... espacially your focus on "romance" being the center of the game. ME:2 is... bloated with romance?? Come on... seriously?

As a lot of posters already pointed out: Romance options can be completely ignored and might take a few minutes of in-game-time. A few minutes in 30-40 hours playtime is surely anything but... bloated?

Or do you call all conversations in game romance? Maybe say "bloated with talk" if thats what you mean - that might clear some misunderstandings.

But then I would suggest - as some others did before - ME:2 is not the game for you. You would be happier with a full-blooded shooter game. We RPG-fans actually love the talk and I think the mix talk:combat is great in ME:2.

I only miss the old skill/exp-system from ME:1 and some more inventory, but thats another topic.

This topic gives me the urge to time all my combat segments it ME2, and then subtract it from my overall recorded playtime just to see how much it space it consumes in game.

I am a RPG fan. I only play RPG games. I enjoy the dialogue and cut-scenes, but not at the expense of cutting down on the amount of combat. I can talk to people in real life. I can not deploy a drone and head shot a geth in real life, thats why I enjoy playing rpg VIDEO GAMES: for the builds, the loot, the over bloated inventory, the crafting of weapons and armor to KILL stuff, not have a deep philosophical discussion on the ethics of genophage. I do that in real life...

No problems. I read other peoples post and reflect on their opinions. Many made a valid point that what I was referring to was really not about romance but the amount of cut-scenes and dialogue in the game generally.

:)

But I like the philosophical discussions on the ethics of the genophage, or the dilemna regarding the true nature of the Geth, or decide whether you want to kill a person or let him live despite their crimes, or overhearing the various conversations in the game, like the Illium Bachelor party, or that Gunnery Chief in the Citadel. If I want pure combat, I'd load up Modern Warfare or something.

You know, you don't have to use any romance options at all. As for the watching a movie part, those aren't exactly interactive....
If you read the games description, this is and RPG with a lot of character development and focus on moral decisions. How did you expect to make these decisions without talking to people?

In addition, taking out the cutscenes wouldn't make more room for combat. They made the game how they wanted it and having more room on a disc wouldn't change the fact. Like you said, they had two discs on the xbox, so size wasn't thier concern.

So I have just finished the game. I will admit that it was a good game but not great. The main problem I have with this game is that there is more cut-scenes and dialogue than there is combat. In fact it feels like the VIDEO GAME is the exact opposite of most games I play, in so far as the dialogue outweights the action 3:1. Usually, for a VIDEO GAME, the action outweights the dialogue 3:1. Take DA:O as a good example of a good ratio for a VIDEO GAME.

When I first heard that the game would have 2 disc for the Xbox I was genuinely excited. Here I was thinking that that would mean oddles and oddles of combat. I mistakenly assumed this because I thought I was buying a VIDEO GAME. However, to my disappointment what I got was little more than a SOAP OPERA in space.

I just had a flash of the Doctor Who forum...

Romance and drama does not make a soap opera. For Mass Effect 2 to be such a beast it would have to employ convoluted melodrama and a lack of sure characterisation.

As good as Dragon age is gameplay and production wise, I wouldn't say it's story, characters or world were all that good. As such I found Dragon Age to be rather lacking as an RPG.

Personally I'd be disappointed in Mass Effect 2 if it had less role play elements. Before anyone says it, no inventory isn't a roleplay element.

I realize that. The point I'm making is that BW can and does have these features in their games. However, with ME there is a imbalance of cut-scenes and dialogue compared to their other games which detracts from gameplay. The problem is that while I have had a really good experience with ME 2 there is something that is not quite right with it. And for me its the amount of cut-scenes and dialogue. After some thought this is the reason I will have trouble replaying the game once I have played out both paragon and renegade. I will more than likely go back to DA:O, if they have patched it for the Xbox, or wait for Alpha Protocol. And that is a real shame considering the potential this IP has as an RPG. Sci-Fi RPG games are my favorite and lets face it, there are not that many good ones around...

This is ME you are talking about, not just some shooter you rush through in 8 hours. At its heart it is a RPG with a rich universe and a focus on characters. If you dont like that, play Modern Warfare but taking away the last outstanding and great thing about the ME franchise would be incredible wrong.

Dialogue and cutscenes are the best things about this game..

Even though its turned very TPS, its still an RPG at heart youve gotta remember that.

I finished the game with not a single romance engaged. I dig all the cinematics and talking though.

It's a TPS with a well-told story, is what I think you meant to say.

I have to disagree... I love the dialogue and cutscenes. This is a very cinematic and story-driven game and the plot is the main focus here. I think ME2 found a better balance than the first game, which tended to have a lot of long moments of pretty much just combat and then even some moments where there was mostly dialogue and very little combat. ME2 has the mixture right, IMO. In fact, I think some of the N7 Missions need a bit more dialogue if anything... they tend to have little to none.

This is the kind of person that ME attracts when it favours Gears of war combat over proper rpg gameplay.

I am going to have to agree with the majority here, the amount of story and character development are perfect, but I do wish there was more combat. I do not believe it is necessary to sacrifice one for the other. ME1 had a great amount of combat and story, and ME2 has improved the character and story aspect by leaps and bounds. I actually wish there was more dialog with you teammates, I find most of them absolutely intriguing.

In reference to the romances of the game I enjoy them because they add conflict, and conflict is what drives all the best stories. One thing I wish would change about the romances is the maturity level, and no I don't mean graphic visuals, but none of the romances go past flirting then sex. Is it too hard to create a romance that is more mature than teenage puppy love? And what's with always avoiding the word love? Is it too unbelievable for the characters to say it, or do the developers feel that we the players couldn't handle seeing a mature relationship blossom?

The OP clearly just doesn't GET Mass Effect. It's not about the action, the action is a by-product...the dialogue, the writing and the interactions are what Mass Effect is about, and what makes it GREAT!

After actually reading all of the OP's posts on this thread I just have to say...eat **** and die, ******. You have to be the ONLY person who feels this way. I hope Bioware does what they should and ignore your little rant.
You say there's a "minority" of people who enjoy the dialogue more than the action? LoL! Get your facts straight you clown...

And if you play for...good grief..."builds" and overbloated loot then FFS go play WoW. Story is and should be the focus of ME, if you don't want a deep engaging narrative then as previously suggested, go play a no-brainer.

Hmm? The guy held up Dragon Age as an example of how an RPG should be done in regards to story. I vehemently disagree with his opinion, but it's not like he just wanted a copy of Modern Warfare.

The dialogue was great in this game.

Had the cutscenes not been interactive and we just sat back and watched it like a movie like in Metal Gear Solid, then yes I would agree.

Actually participating in the game's dialogue makes it a lot of fun though,
