My mage focuses on nature skills. The early spell that freezes things is a lifesaver. Freeze something hit it with a arcane bolt or to and when you get the stone throw spell use that one when they are frozen...very effective.

Also check out my polls.  Made one for this questions before I saw your post.

I moved my game from normal to hard today and it was like night and day - under normal I played through the Origin, Ostagar, Lothering, Soldiers Peak and Redcliff with no reloads and only a couple of party member deaths - rarely even used potions for either healing or mana and for the most part I could allow the default tactics to run the party with only minimal micro-management.

In two hours of playing on hard today my party was wiped 3-4 times just trying to complete a couple of chanter board quests from Redcliff and we used up all the potions I had built up and required constant micromamanging of everyone just to keep them alive.

It was like night and day.

Hmm. I did talk to the thug in this one.... well, she basically said "You die now" and that was it. The far right one?  Oh, I know the one.  You have to run up to them to start the fight, and there's archers up on the stand to the right.  Same as the one I have the link to, it's really easy if you go before they get scattershot.

Ah no wonder. I didn't think that fight was so tough, but then again I went to Denerim early in the hopes I could reconnect with my alienage buddies, but alas, that plan went awry... So I guess I missed out on the wonders of scattershot!

I've been playing the game on Normal, haven't changed the difficulty at all, and it's quite manageable. That said, I'm playing without a healer (I have Morrigan but haven't given her any healing), I HATE using potions so I rarely use them, and I refuse to let anyone die. So I do have to replay a lot of battles, but I like it that way. It forces me to think more tactically rather than just skimming by every battle.

Next time I'll try hard, which, apparently, is not that hard...

My first playthrough on normal was rather challenging, sometimes frustrating but fun overall. After that I had a blast on Nightmare with Oghren, Sten and my backstab rogue laying waste to enemy hordes while Wynne kept everything buffed and topped off. Occasionally got my ass kicked for not being careful but nothing serious.

What made it rather easy was probably the patch and those 2-handed buffs from Bahamines Weapon Rebalance Mod which buffed 2-handed talents a bit (of which I had two in my group). It still was a ton of fun though... charging in and knocking everything over with sweep and war cry.

Can't--not in this playthrough, at least.
