I remember Bioware said that there's going to be one party member returning as a recruitable char in the expansion. After seeing the trailers, I'm pretty sure it's Oghren, which leaves me somewhat disappointed.

Sure he had a few funny lines, but apart from that there was nothing interesting or memorable about him. The stereotypical drunken dwarf warrior, nothing more.

Sigh, theres already two+ threads on this, and. Let me catch you up...

1. Technically we don't know for sure, although Oghren does seem the most likley. Some people are nuts and won't even acknowledge that Oghren is Oghren in the videos.

2. Many range from loving to being cool with Oghren and many range from disliking to hating Oghren. Although middle ground seems to be rare.

3. Oghren is currently standing strong in the #4 postition in the biggest "what character do you want in the expansion list" actually quite high above #5 who is Zevran and very high compared to everyone else. Oghren is also the only non-romancible character in the top most disired. So that says something.

4. People range from thinking he's shallow to fairly deep. I'm in the middle.

5. Chances are we will not see a romancible character return or a character easy to kill for the same reasons Ashley, Kaiden, and Wrex did not appear in ME2.

6. There is debait over if you even can kill him.SOme say you can't, some say you can (although no one's done it) the guide says you can, but the guide also sucks.

7. Your best bet is to trust bioware. If it's NOT Oghren, it's not Oghren. If it's Oghren, heres a chance for bioware to make him deeper and more then a comic relief. So everyone wins except people who DON'T like Oghren and their not people, but rather reptilians trying to sway people away from laughing so crushing depression can overcome humanity and they can rule the world!.

There your all caught up.

If you look at it objectively, Oghren is the only character that actually makes sense. He is a required party member, he can't die, he isn't romanticable or have a huge range of personality changes from your actions, and he would logically help the Origins Grey Warden or a new Orlasian Grey Warden. No one else in the game would fit all of those requirements, which would make including them very complicated for creating dialogue.

The way I look at it is this, if you hate Oghren and the other characters in Awakening are not interesting enough that you would skip using him entirely, then your main issue is likely going to be with the new characters than the fact Oghren is the only one returning.

Thanks for the info.. now I don't "hate" him, but like I said, I don't see anything special or memorable about him, don't see how one can get excited about a drunken dwarf warrior. Good thing we didn't have an Elven tree hugger that comes with him.

He may be #4, but he's no where near the top 3, so there. I think both Leliana and Morrigan would deserve to come back - which is in line with the poll.

Alistar was already seen so I don't see what's the point of putting him in anyway. He'll probably be a non-recruitable character being the king and all.

Yes, despite being a huge Oghren fan, I gots to admit Leliana, Morrigan, or Alistair would be the best choices in terms of pleasing the most people.

That said *SPOILERS*

Leliana can die in more then one way throughtout the story... one way actually very easily. Plus she can be "hardened" making it not only tough to implant her, but also not worth it becuase despite her large fanbase she is prob dead in quite a few saved games. Sadly, despite being so widley popular, I think chances of being a big player in the countinuing world very low compared to many of the others.

Morrigan, I as well as many others, have a feeling she's not gonna play a huge role in awakaning because shes being saved for the sequel. She is the poster child and has a HUGE cliffhanger attached.

Alistair, like Leliana, would be tricky to implant as a companion due to romance and hardening, but he also now plays a HUGE role in the universe, and a very vital one. Alistair fans should be happy though, as I have a feeling he's gonna continue to play a large role in the universe for some time and will get ALLOT of facetime even not as a companion.

Only characters who are somewhat easy to bring back are Sten, Dog, Oghren, and Shale... and Oghren appears to be the most popular out of that group. That assumption is only coming from this forum and a few other forums I visit... so it may not be the case... but thats what I've picked up. Honestly I'm surprised Sten doesn't appear to be more of a favorite.

I think this is the point BioWare could use. Take an not completely developed character from DAO and put it in the expansion. I think it's only he that lacks his background. I mean, you DO learn what he did in the past, but how he met his wife or whatever else is missing. That would be a point. But of course, It could simply be that BW is pulling a prank on us Oghren fans. And if they do, they'll lose serious respect from me, that's for sure.

No the devs are not jerks. Oghren may not be the most popular but he is popular. Bioware knows this. He's been in every awakaning trailer so if it is a joke they are being consistent right?

When it came to comedy I really liked Oghren, and this could be a very good opportunity to add more depth to the character

...I do also request (demand) that we at least see/acknowledge our love interests from DA:O, at least in a similar manner to what happened in ME1.  I feel ridiculously connected to Leliana, and my warden needs his lady! ;)

Yeah its Ohgren but we will still see alistair I believe. Oh and Wynne(I think cause I thought I saw her in the trailer controlling Sylvan Trees' XP) And if im not mistaken the ghostly figure in trailer 1 for awakening might be either Loghain or Cailan. Other than that im sure its just oghren recruit and only those 2 visibles.

The fact that Oghren was the least developed character makes him an appropriate choice as well. I think that he was really cool and funny but he really didn't have as much to say as the other characters. Which made me a bit mad, thinking that they created an interesting character but didn't delve in further, he deserves a spot in Awakening solely because of this.

Oh, he can die. If you anger him enough, he'll attack you. You defeat him, and he can either leave, stay, or you can kill him. The exact dialogue is:
Oghren: No, no. I'm done.
PC: No, Oghren. I'm done with you. Kill him.

And that's the glorious death of Oghren.
That said, I never actually killed him. Never got below 0 in approval. I like to keep my companions close.

OK, there are not plot points that can cause him to die or attack you. Dropping him to -100 approval, goading him to attack you, then choosing to kill him is really excessive requirements for him to be "killable." No other character requires anywhere near that level of effort. You couldn't even get a low enough approval without using him pretty much the entire game.

That is true, but that doesn't mean you can't kill him, that's all I'm saying :P

You can. It's a long way to get to the killing, and as you say there are no plot points leading to his attack. It's nigh impossible, but he's not invincible.

Oghren is arguably the best companion.

He is obviously the one who recieved the least direct and sustained attention and the fewest polishing passes.

But that actually makes him better; like the rest, he isn't overwrought into a cartoon; and therefore he is the most retro-rpg of any of them, since he isn't overflowing with excessive expository dialogue and he doesn't cloy you to death.  Only Oghren doesn't suffer from Aribeth syndrome.

It seems to me that Bioware was probably least proud of him-- but he is the NPC least touched by contingencies of cinEmAticonsolification, and that makes him the most genuinely interesting companion, even if he is arguably the most cliched out of the box, the drunken dwarf, as well as he least explained (and explains himself least) of the companions.

If an NPC tells you every possible thing about themselves there is to know, then how can they be intriguing?

He is the only companion that really seems to organically belong in a 'dark and gritty' world-- partly because of his backstory, but mostly because he doesn't talk you to death and because Steve Blum doesn't overplay so much that you actually have to listen to what he has to say.

There was alot interesting about him.  Next time you play the game actually talk to him and get his approval high.  He is actually a far more interesting character than you are giving him credit for.  He has a ton of character developement and some of the most touching moments in the game are from Oghren...and that may be especially because he tries to escape his problems through heavy drinking.

One thing you can't help but love about the guy is he's your only companion that fights along side you cause it's the right thing to do and ONLY because its the right thing to do. It's Alistair's duty to fight by your side and defend agianst the blight for more then one reason, Morrigan's forced into going, Sten owes you his life, Liliana is doing it because of her vision, Dog owes you his life, Shale owes you her life, Zevran owes you his life, and the secret companion owes you his life. Oghren's got my back  cause hes a good guy.Thats the best kinda buddy.

I can see an argument for not bringing back Sten, Lelianna, Morrigan, Wynne, Zevran, and Shale as being valid and understandable. But not bringing back Dog makes no sense. The warhound is suppose to be fiercely loyal after being imprinted with a master. There is absolutely no reason outside of death that Dog wouldn't still be with you.

The only other argument I could see for Dog (other then he died) is that the Orlias Warden wouldn't necessarilly have him. But that's a pretty weak argument personally.

I would really prefer Dog too.  Oghren is the companion I disliked the most, not counting Secret Companion.

I bet the real reason that Dog wouldn't appear is that he's more work than anyone but Shale.  It's easy to run out of talents to choose since he only has eight (at least on the PC it's only eight).  So the devs would need to come up with new talents that would only really be used by Dog.  Costwise, it makes more sense to have the devs develop talents for new classes, ones that can be used by your main character, companions, aliies, and foes.

If they wanted to give us a dwarf from DA:O, I would prefer Gorim, as I really enjoyed his personality.  Or it would have been interesting to recruit Seweryn as a GW.  But generally speaking, having a perpetually drunk alcoholic guard my back is not going to be my choice.
