Since first time I got my hands on Mass Effect 2 I knew it's extraordinary game and I was, so to say, pissed off with multiple CTD's (crashes to desktop) every few minutes that made my gameplay horrible experience.
So I started to read through this forum as I was eager to find some kind of solution for these random annoying crashes.
My system specs are:
Proc: Pentium IV 630 3.0 GHz HT (single core)
MB: Abit Ni8 Sli Gr nVidia chipset Realtek AC'97 sound
HDD: 2 x 160 Gb Seagate Barracuda
Mem: 2 x 2 Gb DDR2 800 Mhz Kingston memory module
GPU: Gainward nVidia 9600 GT golden sample 512 Mb
Win 7 Ultimate x64
Must say that I never had any problems playing other resource-demanding games. Alway kept my system drivers up to date.
I tried all solutions people posted here: Lowering game settings, reinstalling drivers for GPU, DirectX, sound Realtek drivers, turning off UAC, installing game at system directory (:C/), reinstalling game, but nothing helped, crashes occured randomly.
So, while playing game in windowed mode and having resource monitor turned on, I noticed all the time processor usage is above 90% on each thread (two threads CPU windows treats like two cores), and when it reaches 100%. CPU fan starts to rotate fast and loud so I noticed it is overheat problem (BIOS settings prevents CPU to be damaged and shuts off proccesses causing overload). Then suddenly light came bright and shine...
I opened the case and CPU fan was covered with DUST so i took good old VACUUM CLEANER and removed dust from fan, and from all other parts inside.
Since then, and it's been 48 hours ago, my computer wasn't turned off and I played approx 20 hours WITHOUT SINGLE CRASH.
Problem solved, at least for me... so after two days testing with various display settings I decided to post my experience here.
Cheers, going to enjoy this beautiful game...
