When i try loading the character creator, the loading screen appears, which is a mass relay, and then it freezes, and i have to restart the computer.
i have a single AMD athlon 64 3500+ clocked at 2.2 ghz, 2 gigs of ram and a geforce 7900, 7 gigs of free space.
Mass effect 2 freezing on first load..

Have you tried running the configuration utility without the launcher? You may need to lower the settings that way. Your CPU is below the minimum somewhat, and will need all the help you can give it (such as running from a Clean Boot with almost nothing running in the background, such as no AV, and not accessing the 'net).
