Ok, so we have to do something about the inventory, don't we?
The inventory system in ME1 was overwhelming to handle in some cases.
ME2 has greater diversity in weapons, easier to handle, but lacks something.

So, in ME1 we basically had 4 weapons, apart from that, only the stats were different. Having a Banshee VII or a Terminator IV was exactly the same when it came to weapon handling, they had the same behaviour.
In ME2 it was improved, two assault rifles we have, and they work differently. And it makes sense anyways, it's enough to have one trusty assault rifle on me, I don't like carrying a weaponry fitting an Alliance Battlecruiser around.

But there is absolutely no weapon customization. Which is a huge stepback. Which gives a good opportunity. Place several weapon modfictaions (somewhere between 4 and 400, the point is to be reasonable with the amount), let's say, one improves the damage at the cost of thermal usage, one expands the clip capacity, etc, whatever is fitting to the combat system. Give each weapon two-to-four slots, so we can vary and customize the effectiveness. Do not stick with upgrades only. Bring mods back, more variety, more diversity, more happy people.
And bring back Ammo types.
I know, it's the speciality of the soldier-oriented classes now, but you could replace that with grenades. Cyro grenades, concussion grenades, napalm grenades, whatever grenades for example 6 of each for a mission, replenishing on the Normandy. Problem solved.

Oh, and put in a Helmet toggle. It was already listed several times, and personally I don't use helmets (only the visor), but a lot of people mentioned it. Well, different helmets give you different bonuses, so it has to be figured out somehow. For example toggling the helmet off also disables the bonus, or something like that.
