I tried the VC run time download idea and no dice. "Play" still doesn't work.

Yeah, that's probably the issue Daterano pointed out with the broken game definition file that's used by Vista/Win7's Games Explorer. You should be able to run the launcher directly or by making your own shortcut wherever you want it.

Did you try running the game through the actual executable file rather than the launcher? If not, open it in C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Dragon Age\\\\bin_ship\\\\daorigins.exe (default directory).

EDIT:  Any Bioware staff member reading this, you've got broken character escaping code in the posting system, it doesn't escape my slashes it just adds one.

Also if it won't run, then run it from the command-line to see what error it generates.

Or if for whatever reason command-line is unavailable you can also try Start menu -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer, and hit the 'Application' category on the left of the Event Viewer. Then look for an entry that has a 'source' of 'Application Error' in the Source column, double-click it and see if it references to daorigins.exe and then paste the contents of that log here.

What looks like is happening is that the patch was built using a different (presumably newer) version of the MS VC++ 2005 libraries. You can find the latest version here.

This worked on my wife's PC DVD version.   Loading the new VC++ runtime fxied the patch, however, the patch did not fix her problem.   She gets a black screen in the Dalish Camp when she looks around after loading a save game.

Yeah, the Game Explorer launcher is another thing that Bioware needs to fix.

Thanks for the tip on making the Games Explorer link to work! Looks like it's something else that Bioware needs to fix...

Mine is working just fine. I'm running Windows 7 here and it seemed to be broken at first, but I ran the Media Center shortcut to the launcher and everything started working fine. The only thing that seems broken is the Games Explorer stuff. Can't load the game through it or even access anything about it. Solution was to grab the original daoriginsgdf.dll off the DVD and replace the newer one with it ( must be bugged ) . Otherwise it seems to be running great.

I think vist a64 bit users should avoid this patch until they find the solution to it

I took a closer look at the log output in plated84's post. The version the patched DAO is looking for is 8.0.50727.4053 which is the latest, released last July. The redistributable package that DAO originally installed is from 2006

To be fair I think 2006 was probably the last time the redistributable package changed.  I don't think there were any updates that required it to change since then.

There was a fairly recent update for Visual Studio.  We just updated it at my work a month or two ago and everything compiled after the update wouldn't run until we ran the new redist package.
