Glad to see a comment about Avira flagging a trojan in this patch because that happened to me too but the board is so busy it got buried. BTW, I did see the announcement which is why I dl it but reading here and not having a problem yet maybe I wait a bit to install it.
If anyone can tell me how to use the forum search function? Such a silly question, I know but that big old search box up there doesn't give me any results back.
cheers

My roommate ask me why my computer hard drive kept grinding while I was away eating dinner. Nothing was running on my computer, so I could not figure out what was going on. Then I tried to start DA (I had just downloaded the patch before dinner) and the game won't start now. And, my computer is acting REALLY funky and like taking 3-4 mins to restart now.

I have vista 64. I too had the same problems after the patch. And also continued to have problems after updating the Visual C++ files. I then went into the control panel, and in programs I uninstalled/removed all references to visual c++. Rebooted computer.
Went into my browser and promptly downloaded/installed the 32 bit (x86) version of below ..
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
And it now works.

Tried the MS VC++ updates - no change. Anyone?

Okay - did get it working thanks to another post. It has to be the 32 bit (x86) version of the 2005 libraries, not the 64bit. Installed that version and now it starts. Seriously - fix the patch, guys!

I used the C++ x86.exe version and my game starts fine now. I hope it works for everyone else (although I hear it does not work for all).

Mine works now after x86 installed too. Boy, I almost unistalled the entire game, and reinstalled, That would have taken all night. Sadly, many people will not know how to fix it yet, or the x86 fix won't work for them

Jumping though all these damn hoops, and we have a bricked game... I am livid. THIS is why PC gaming is dead.
grrrr..
I bet you this would NEVER would have happened if EAs stench didn't get near Bioware.

I had success with this Patch but only because I followed the downloads on this page which has been re-posted 3 times I believe.
- http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
For anyone on Vista Home 64 bit, try and download the 2005 (X86) version only. Do not download the SP1 edition if you are having problems deciding which one to download. You are not required to uninstall any previous versions of VC++ 2005 and above.
This is what worked for me, I am without guarantee that what has worked for me will work for you. I felt I would share what I did as well.
The specific file on that website is "vcredist_x86.exe" which is only 2.6 Megs. I never liked those Microsoft download pages....
Anyway I do not think it was Bio Wares intention to release a buggy patch. However irritating it was to not have it readily functional on so many people's systems this sounds more like a... User error? Rather than a development error.
Edit:: Also thanks to all the people who found links to proper downloads for the VC++ versions. I went through a few of them before I found the right one to download (again I hate Microsofts download pages
).

It worked for me, just be sure you're using the right download for your operating system. If you don't know whether you have 32bit or 64bit, I believe you can find out with the DA:O Configuration utility.

Your BEST bet is to NOT apply patch till Bioware fixes it themselves. No use losing sleep if the game runs fine without it. I'm waiting till they release a bug-free patch. For those jumping thru hoops, I salute you. Shame on Bioware.

Sure would be nice if Bioware were to at least acknowledge that there is a problem with this patch and say they are working on a fix.

Same problem here on Vista 64 after patching. Easiest solution is reinstall and not patch the game until Bioware fix it.

Thanks to Tomaltach I am now back up and running. I followed his link to the MS site and downloaded vcredist_x86.exe

Avira flagged the 1.01a patch as a trojan, so that made me wary and came on here to see whats up. Well not sure if really is a trojan or not, but seeing all the problems people have I'm holding on installing it for the time beeing.

on a 64bit Vista.
1. Install the game.
2. Install the x86 2005 MS VC++ runtime libraries
3. Then the patch.
Is this right?

Well I have 32bit Vista.
Installed the game
Installed x86 2005 MS VC++ runtime libraries
Installed patch
Game runs and everything seems to be working fine here at least.
